JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) -- In what was the late U.S. Rep. John Murtha's western Pennsylvania district - reachable through John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport or John P. Murtha Highway - Democrats watch nervously, hoping his former top aide can hold on to the House seat.
Mark Critz, who worked for Murtha for more than a decade in Pennsylvania, including the past three as district director, is in a fierce fight with Republican businessman Tim Burns in the May 18 special election. The national GOP has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to push Burns' candidacy, sensing a legitimate shot of capturing the seat held for 36 years by Murtha, an ally of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
A loss would unnerve Democrats, who face the backlash against the party in power typical for a midterm election year, and depress the outlook for the party's other candidates in Pennsylvania, which Barack Obama won easily in 2008.

If we do not get this seat i will be VERY dissappointed in PA freepers
Call EVERYONE
Get in your cars and do mass parades!! WITH BULLHORNS
Hold signs made with bedsheets over thruway overpasses (it’s fun!) during rush hour
GET OUT THE VOTE
and not JUST a win.. but a crushing mind-altering blowout to send them scurrying under their rocks
What are they sore about? They got a brand new municipal airport that nobody uses and a US Navy amphibious assault ship that no Marine wants to step foot on out of the passing of John Murtha.
Critz is trading on his years with Murtha, Murtha’s record and his popularity with unions (his particular constituency is full of them). It’s going to be tough. Plus people tend to vote for who they know. Stupid logic. The voters knew that Murtha was a douchebag, but because they knew him, they would vote for him time after time. A relative unknown like Burns or even Russell has a very slim chance without a lot of financial backing and any other kind of support they can get.
It is my fervent hope that we win this seat.
However, the Rats have smartly chosen a candidate who knows all the Murtha butt-boys in that district and how to garner their support. The Pork receivers will be lined up to ensure their gravy train doesn’t end.
I wish it wasn’t so, but there it is.
I like the way you think Mr. K.
The RCCC has spent $80,000 more on the Burns campaign than the DCCC has spent on Critz. Also, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has given Burns $100,000. He has more money on-hand now than Critz.
BTTT!!!
Ping...
Let’s hope that cash translates into a victory.
PA-12 ping
The voters kept Murtha in office because he brought money into the district. The voters gave up their integrity for bennies. Murtha was unique. Anyone else is unproven so it is kind of a level playing field, even for the greedy voters and union thugs of southwestern Pennsylvania.
Other candidates have a shot at the seat in my opinion. Maybe enough of the voters will make a rational decision this time around, especially because the Democrats are so obviously corrupt and, worse, ignore the wishes of their constituents. Everybody knows that Obama's policies have been disastrous to our country, especially our children, grand children, and great grandchildren.
The Democrats will fight like wild animals for this seat. Expect to see them pull out all the stops. Expect busloads of new voters to show up on election day, and truckloads of absentee ballots from every corner of the compass.
Have you not heard the saying: “Money is the mother’s milk of politics”?
