This is what Governor Lingle stated on Sunday, May 2, 2010, on New York WABC radio to Rabbi Shmuley Boteach:

It's been an odd situation... This issue kept coming up so much in the campaign, and again I think it's one of those issues that is simply a distraction from the more critical issues that are facing the country... So I had my health director, who is a physician by background, go personally view the birth certificate in the birth records of the Department of Health, and we issued a news release at that time saying that the president was, in fact, born at Kapi'olani Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii. And that's just a fact and yet people continue to call up and e-mail and want to make it an issue and I think it's again a horrible distraction for the country by those people who continue this.

I wonder how Governor Lingle imagine that she can get away with saying this?? I imagine that she must believe that she has sufficient political cover from demographic segments. I wonder if this is actually political payback from the women and black demographic segments for leaving them out of the original Constitution. Evidently the law itself is now becoming a "horrible distraction."

It sounds to me more like the Governor just made a simple mistake. She had thought that Fukimo has issued a statement that Obama was born in Hawaii. Fukimo made no such statement. The Governor has also made no such statement that Obama was born in Hawaii. She simply said that she thought Fukimo has said it. Hardly a lie, and hardly revealing any confidential information. This little gaff changes nothing. We're still right where we were: “Where's the long form?”.
