AZ-Sen. 2010: McCain likely grinning as GOP accepts open primary (will Rats save their Maverick?)

The Republican Party is re-opening its big umbrella - or more accurately, not closing its primary after all.

At a meeting over the weekend, the state executive committee decided to forgo a legal challenge to a law that allows independents to choose which primary they want to vote in.

While some members argue that Republicans should be choosing the party's nominee, state GOP spokesman Matt Roberts said the group decided to hold off until at least until next year, given the slow wheels of justice and the looming August primary.

Somewhere, John "Don't Call Me Maverick" McCain is probably a happy senator. Not so much challenger J.D. Hayworth, whose strongest appeal may be to the more conservative Republicans who are faithful primary voters.

With an “open” primary, can we hire ACORN to help JD’s chnaces of winning?

They’ll be pushing Jeb Bush.

Why do I have a funny feeling that there are 2 new executives at Cindy McCain’s Busweiser distributorship this morning?

I guess we will see what happens. In 2008, McCain couldn’t even win 50% of the primary vote, the only top tier candidate of either party who could not win his/her home state with 50% or more of the vote.

You are correct. The date is at the end of May sometime. AZ did this as a “sore loser” law to prevent such an occurrence.

Probably because you harbor no illusions about the character of GOP insiders.

Well, this will bring McCain's move to the right to a screeching halt.

Maverick is back!

This is why we had John McCain as our standard bearer in 2008.

The party sure learned from it’s mistakes, didn’t it.

And remember folks, they’ve gotten the message. They’re here for us.

The Republican party is dead to me. It’s absolutely worthless.

I’m not sure either. At the link, it appears the filing deadline for independents is after the Primary.

Maybe someone better informed than I can clarify.

[This was done specifically for McCain. Wonder how much he pledged to donate to the Rep. party of AZ.]

His wife promised a huge kegger from her daddy’s Budweiser warehouse.

“Not sure why this is a story since things will simply remain as they have been: independents can vote on any primary ballot other than Libertarian. JD commented on this a few months back and expressed no concern about it.”

Yeah. They aren’t changing things for this election.

Like California, Arizona restricts the GOP primary to registered Republicans and non-alligned (those not in any other party).

And I would think that the Dems would rather face Hayworth than McCain.

I wonder. McCain wouldn't vote with them to organize the Senate. And he wouldn't vote with them on national defense issues.

But McCain would be ready to "reach across the aisle" on any number of Democrat initiatives. As such, he might do them more good than would a freshman Democrat.

The Republican party is dead because Republican primary voters are brain dead.
