A British Army sharp shooter has told how he killed five Taliban soldiers in 28 seconds - in a desperate bid to protect a British patrol that the insurgents were preparing to ambush.

The enemy targets were more than a mile away when the sniper, a corporal serving with 4 Rifles, got the all clear to take them out.

The corporal - who has 37 confirmed kills in just four months in the war zone - said that he and his spotter were set up in an old fort in Haji Alem, in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand province.

They spotted the Taliban soldiers getting ready to attack a British foot patrol.

The sniper, who has not been named for security reasons, was using the L115A3 long-range rifle, which has an effective range of 1,100 metres.

The enemy targets were more than a mile away ....

[the rifle,] which has an effective range of 1,100 metres

... a mile is 1600 metres, so at "more than a mile away", the targets were well outside the effective range, making this even more impressive.

I read an article about Americans being pinned down and asked for air support. The “commanders” called a lawyer and were told not to send them.

They have to call a lawyer to approve of air strikes??

.338 Lapua for the win. That round, that rifle, and the well-trained Brits using it are certainly making waves!

These days all snipers are chained to the weenies. One of my kids friends was a marine sniper in Iraq. He spent five years there. After the initial invasion him and his spotter had to get permission to fire on terrorist unless they were actively shooting at US troops. he is certain that many times they were radio linked directly to the Pentagon when asking for permission to shoot. This guy had Mookie dead to rights once and was denied permission to shoot because fatboy was inside a Mosque wall. In the second battle of Fallujah he was denied permission to shoot some guys that had a mortar and were shooting from inside a Mosque compound. They killed five Marines.

They are running our country in Washington. They are now in charge of wars. Shakespeare had the right idea.

"He's chained to the staff weenies" "Staff weenies" are not in the chain-of-command.

Neither is the unit's JAG. Doesn't mean he doesn't have input.

Is this a war? Or is it a police action? A ‘reconstruction’? A ‘nation-build’?

Unfortunately our soldiers are put in the position of fighting an enemy not for the purpose of smashing them and taking their territory, but for stabilizing a nascent—and quite corrupt—government. When the enemy blends with the local population, killing him at any cost may impede the larger ‘mission.’

I’m glad it isn’t me.

I totally agree. If we are not there to kill baddies, then get out.

Please do note, the original poster here at YT has it wrong...there was never a missile, you can clearly see the shock wave from the Abrams milliseconds before the end of the sniper...(CAUTION...LANGUAGE)

Jude Law incarnate !

Cinematically, yes.

Real Life, more like
Chuck Mawhinney or Carlos Hathcock Incarnate

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Mawhinney

That recently-aired documenatry on History Channel with re-enactments
of Hathcock and Mawhinney’s most notable actions...
scary stuff.

Just very glad they are on our side.
Like the gentleman in the current article.

4th Battalion, The Rifles.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rifles

The Rifles are a descendant of the 95th Rifles. Those who have read Bernard Cornwall's Sharpe series will be familiar with the regiment.
