George Alan Rekers, a prominent anti-gay activist and cofounder of the conservative Family Research Council, recently returned from a 10-day trip to Europe with a male escort who advertises on a Web site called Rentboy.com, according to a May Miami New Times article that was lighting up the liberal blogosphere and gay media outlets Wednesday.
Rekers told the New Times he hired the escort to help carry luggage, not for sexual purposes, and that he only learned his companion was a prostitute midway through the trip. On Wednesday, he published a statement on his Web site decrying the New Times story as "slanderous."
"A recent article in an alternative newspaper cleverly gave false impressions of inappropriate behavior because of its misleading innuendo, incorrectly implying that Professor George Rekers used the Rentboy website to hire a prostitute to accompany him on a recent trip," the statement said. "Contrary to Internet stories based on this slanderous article, following medical advice Professor George Rekers requires an assistant to lift his luggage in his travels because of an ongoing condition following surgery. ... Professor Rekers was not involved in any illegal or sexual behavior with his travel assistant."
A professor of psychology at the University of South Carolina and a Baptist minister, Rekers is a leading proponent of therapy to "cure" homosexuality and has testified against gay adoption. He is a board member of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, which calls itself "a professional, scientific organization that offers hope to those who struggle with unwanted homosexuality."
The escort, who was identified in the article by the pseudonym 'Lucien,' told the newspaper that his services were enlisted through Rentboy.com, which helps clients "find gay escorts, male escorts, gay masseurs, male masseurs and learn how to become an escort."

People are dismissing the notion of someone counseling a self-confessed hustler.
“So, you feel youre lowing the charges from homosexuality and hypocrisy to Felony Stupid?”

No, not at all. What I am saying is that Dr. Rekers is an acknowledged expert (worldwide) on the dangers that homosexuals pose to adoptive children. He was instrumental in preventing predatory homosexuals in Florida from getting their hands on young, vulnerable kids (eg Jesse Dirkhising). The bottom line is that Dr. Rekers poses a tremendous threat to homosexual militants, so they are making up lies about him.
“...and that he only learned his companion was a prostitute midway through the trip.”
My favorite line from “Arthur”:
“You’re a hooker? I only thought I was doing great with you!”
Rekers told the New Times he hired the escort to help carry luggage.”
Hmmm, that is a new name for it.
“...he only learned his companion was a prostitute midway through the trip.”
and how many encounters were necessary to make you aware of his occupation?
Sorry, guys! This guy’s explanation stinks.
One of my employees used to say, “I was born at night but not last night.”
Sad to hear.
Men watch yourselves.
I had to look at the site. What has been seen, cannot be unseen.
Only Jesus Christ is Jesus Christ, as has been proven many, many times.
Is it a lie that he hired an "assistant" from a site where young male escorts advertise their services?
I don't see where he's been accused of anything else.
This guy has the lamest excuse (lies) since Ted Faggart.
Dr. Rekers sounds like he’s light in the loafers.
Response: Of course.
Nonsense. If a young male hustler made an appointment to see Mr. Rekers at his office for counseling, it would have been a non story for anybody outside the militant gay community.
Rekers' hiring him for two weeks is completely different and even if innocuous, it's so easily misrepresented as to fatally compromise any good that Rekers may have done.
I have absolutely zero problems believing that.
But this just does not look good. Doesn’t mean it isn’t good... but it doesn’t look good.
I don’t remember reading that He ever hired a prostitute to take a solo vacation with Him.
IOW, no, in no way suspicious.
“Is it a lie that he hired an ‘assistant’ from a site where young male escorts advertise their services?”
There’s no evidence at all that Rekers was cruising some homosexual website. He can’t be held responsible for what this idiot kid was doing on his free time any more than anyone knows what an employee does.
How about, if you’re leading a secret, sinful lifestyle, don’t think that public posturing against it somehow “evens things out..”
Stupidity. Hypocrisy. Arrogance.
This story might be big enough to put the phrase “carrying my luggage” into the language with a completely different context. I think I smell a “South Park” storyline in the making.
Amazing. The Washington Post keeps taking on tough stories such as this and the John Edwards’ love child.
