The Phoenix Suns will wear "Los Suns" on their jerseys in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals on Wednesday night, owner Robert Sarver said, "to honor our Latino community and the diversity of our league, the state of Arizona, and our nation."
The decision to wear the jerseys on the Cinco de Mayo holiday stems from a law passed by the Arizona Legislature and signed by Gov. Jan Brewer that has drawn widespread criticism from Latino organizations and civil rights groups that say it could lead to racial profiling of Hispanics. President Barack Obama has called the law "misguided."

If that is the FoxNews headline/title, then they are as bad as the rest of the driveby media in misleading or downright false reporting. The “Los Suns” and “Los Spurs” and “Los Lakers” jerseys have been around for a lot longer than this new law, and wearing the jerseys has everything to do with Cinco de Mayo and celebrating Latin American culture and almost nothing to do with the new Arizona law.

I already boycott the NBA. Ever since they started predominately called fouls based on the name on the back of the jersey instead of the play on the court. I believe it was sometime in the mid 90s.

As part of the NBA's first fully-integrated Hispanic marketing campaign, éne•bé•a, the NBA today announced the schedule of this season's Noche Latina (Latin Night) program, which celebrates the league's Hispanic heritage with special telecasts and in-arena festivities, including distinctive NBA team uniforms.
This year, Noche Latina celebrations will begin on March 3 and take place in Los Angeles, Miami, Phoenix, San Antonio, Dallas, Chicago, Houston, New York, and Orlando, and highlight the impact of the league's Hispanic players -- including 18 players from six Latin American countries -- while paying tribute to the more than 16 million Hispanic NBA fans across the country.
"With Hispanics comprising 15 percent of our fan base, we have a responsibility to connect with them in meaningful ways," said Saskia Sorrosa, NBA Senior Director of Hispanic Marketing. "Noche Latina is an opportunity for us to thank the Hispanic community for their support and showcase how their pride and passion impact our teams and players."
Noche Latina, first launched during the 2006-07 NBA season, features uniforms that display the team name as spoken by the Latin population. The Miami Heat, for example, is called "El Heat"; the San Antonio Spurs are referred to as "Los Spurs."
To further honor Hispanic fans and players during Noche Latina games, participating teams will host in-arena Latin-themed activities, including music, performances, and giveaways. Noche Latina events will be supported with television and radio advertising on both English- and Spanish-language media across the country as well as on the league's Spanish-language Web site. Noche Latina merchandise, including the special game jerseys produced by adidas, will be available at the NBA Store on Fifth Avenue in New York City, Champs Sports retail stores, online at NBAStore.com, and at in-arena stores for participating teams.
I wonder how sympathetic the NBA would be if a team wanted to express their views on other hot button political issues? For example, suppose the players wanted to wear jerseys that included a Pro-Life message, or supporting the second amendment? Better still, suppose a team owner felt strongly about having English declared the official language of this country, and had the players wear jerseys that reflected this view? How quickly do you think the NBA would step in and put a stop to it?

Boycott the Suns and boycott Cinco de Mayo.

For sure. But in the quota-conscious minds of the liberals, a corporation or even a public entity like a police department could get in trouble with the diversity czars if they don't have 12% Blacks, 13% Latinos, 52% women, 0.3% left-handed Lithuanian lesbians, etc. But in the NBA (and the NFL, for that matter,) the fact that these extremely highly-paid workers are comprised of blacks at a level that is 6 or 7 times their percentage of the general population is routinely applauded and called "diversity."
Who in the world thought up the idiotic idea of putting "Los Suns" on the team's jerseys to speak out against the recently passed immigration law in Arizona? Whoever it is should be fired.
The law almost exactly mirrors the federal law already in place on the federal level but which our derelect government refuses to enforce.
Further, one would think the owners/general managers of the team would have enough intelligence to know how much of a drain the flood of illegals is on our economy and resources, especially for border states like yours! In addition, why would anyone think it a good idea to “support” lawbreakers”? Oh, that’s right – the NBA is full of them, so it does fit.
If you are going to make such a stupid statement, at least do it properly and use the Spanish for "Suns". Right now, the shirts look like they say "Lost Suns". But perhaps that is appropriate.
My sentiments exactly. The refs also routinely allowed the Michael Jordans of the world to manage to go from the three-point line to the basket to execute a dunk shot without ever putting the ball on the ground.
Why can’t sports be just sports? I guess it’s for the same reason that causes and politics enter into everything these days. They started this nonsense (I think) with baseball’s support for breast cancer awareness, and now, of course, it has come to this - championing political causes.
Actually, I guess large companies started this nonsense, at the urging of activists, when they embarked on a campaign to become “good corporate citizens”. No, making a profit and providing services, jobs, and adding to progress and prosperity isn’t good enough. We have to show we care - about the environment, about schools, about poverty, about cancer, and on and on. Bah, humbug! Sam Walton did more to lift people out of poverty by making Wal Mart a success than all the activists, do-gooders, and cause groups combined.
BTW, is there anything sillier than one of those big, mean MLB umpires wearing a pink armband? *sigh* We have become a nation of whiners and pansies.
