Ganley, Renacci win Republican Primaries (Two great candidates in Ohio)

Putting money where their mouths are helped Republican businessmen Tom Ganley and Jim Renacci win crowded congressional primaries for the chance to unseat Democratic incumbents this November.

Ganley, a Brecksville auto dealer who lent his campaign more than $2 million, bested five shoestring challengers looking to take on Rep. Betty Sutton of Copley Township this fall.

"I think I am running on adrenaline right now," an excited Ganley said after declaring victory at his campaign headquarters in Broadview Heights. He said his November campaign will focus on his record of creating jobs and managing money.

"As a businessman, the term deficit is not in my vocabulary," he added. "You just can't live that way."

Other Republicans in his race had hoped to ride Tea Party angst to victory without a big bankroll. It didn't work. Tea Party support splintered among many hopefuls, said candidate Jason Meade of New Franklin, who believes Ganley's name recognition gave him the advantage.

"The Tea Party movement is growing and we will see more of it," Meade predicted.

Renacci, a former Wadsworth mayor whose businesses include nursing homes and a car dealership, bested three rivals, including former Ashland County Commissioner Matt Miller, after winning endorsements from conservative groups, the Ohio Republican Party among them, and loaning $120,000 to his campaign. He'll run against Alliance Rep. John Boccieri.

In districts that are demographically safer for Democrats, businessman Peter Corrigan of Rocky River, who loaned $90,000 to his campaign, won the GOP nod to face Cleveland Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich.

Former Food Town CEO Rich Iott of Monclova, who has loaned more than $300,000 to his campaign, triumphed over former Toledo Police Chief Jack L. Smith of Holland for the chance to take on Toledo Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur in a district that stretches into Lorain County.

What's with "loaning" money to their own campaign?

Some kind of tax dodge?

No tax dodge. If you loan your campaign money, and win, you can repay yourself from the lobbyist / interest group donations that incumbency attracts. Outright donations cannot be repaid. The really rich self-funded candidates self-donate rather than self-lend in order to be able to hold themselves out as truly unaffected by special interest money.
