Iranian recce aircraft have been checking out US and Coalition vessels on a regular basis. Remember this is international waters. Iranian naval vessels when they venture out into international waters also get checked out. It has been going on for decades.

Its a big game of chicken that has been played on the high seas since the end of WWII.
