Why BP should pay oil spill's full cost (but liability law suggests it might not have to)
National Post ^ | 05/04/2010 | Terence Corcoran

By some merciful force or just good luck, the giant BP oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico yesterday remained the greatest environmental disaster that hasn't happened.

For more than three days, news reports have been filled with alarming tales of imminent disaster, but then the wind direction shifted and the worst failed to materialize.

Maybe millions of gallons of oil will eventually crash onto the shores of the U.S. gulf states, creating untold damage to the environment and the lives of millions of people.

Or maybe fate will push the oil on a course that will avoid an unprecedented catastrophe. If the worst does happen, let's hope the full cost of the affair is borne by the perpetrators. That would be BP.

A lot of gun ships are riding this oil slick with other agendas -- environmental, political and economic. Environmentalists aren't waiting; they want U.S. offshore oil exploration and development halted. The World Socialist called the still-pending Gulf Coast event "an American Chernobyl." Paul Krugman, the Nobel economist, warned President Barack Obama to take on the "Drill, baby, drill" crowd and predicted a reversal of what he called a long slide in the influence of environmentalism. Arnold Schwarzenegger, governor of California, withdrew support for drilling off the coast of California.

On the other side, economic nationalists say offshore oil is a national imperative and America's only hope for energy independence. A spill is a price to be paid. As a British company, BP is being painted as an unworthy foreign operator, while the Obama administration is accused of tardy action. On the far right, the rig explosion that triggered the oil spill is said to be the work of saboteurs of various origin.

talk about an agenda “gunship” riding the crisis

It’s another eco-whackjob.

It’s another eco-whackjob.

Surely you're not implying that environmentalist whackos conspired to cause this spill ....

You would think all these enviro whackos are living in some container, heated by the rays of the sun, growing their own food, raising their own chickens and pigs...but in fact, they’re using the same products we are...oil, coal, gas, etc etc..

the danger (and I think at this point it is entirely obvious) is that the Obama Administration has every intention of piling cost upon cost upon far-fetched extraneous cost on them, in a concerted effort to bankrupt BP and drive them under.

Nothing will earn them accolades and needed bona-fides from the extreme Left like putting a Big Eeevil Oil Company down for the count.

Hey....you’ve just given me a capital idea!

Reverse Carbon Credits! Rationing coupons for food, shelter and heat which one can only obtain by proving that they have actually CONTRIBUTED TO the net national energy supply.
Since all of these green loonies are so intent on remaining carbon-neutral, they’d get pretty hungry and learn their lesson real quick I reckon...

No, eco-whackjobs only want to exploit it. What did you think they would do.

I think the jury is still out on the actual cause. No I don’t think it was the Bill Ayers weather underground either — That would be so Vietnam era.

nah....whoever did this had to have some heavy-duty technical capabilities. A few whacko college kids building a half-a*sed IUD could not pull off something like this.

(my pet theory is George Soros commissioning a team of Venezuelan frogman saboteurs. But the ChiComs who are drilling the Gulf could also be a suspect. Or the House of Saud could have hired someone. Or the Russians. You just never know)

That was my take when I read BP saying they would pay all reasonable costs, and 0 saying they would pay all costs. And what is the best way to drive up (labor) costs?

The figure of a 5,000 bbl/day leak would make it one productive oil well and they aren't even pumping.

China’s oil demand is projected to grow by 80 percent between 2010 and 2030 due to its rapidly developing economy and in particular its growing middle class and exploding auto market.

China’s largest national, government-owned oil companies—CNPC, CNOOC, and Sinopec—have taken aggressive action over the last several years to secure oil abroad in an effort to cope with this growth and a looming global oil crunch. China’s recent overseas oil deals have the potential to deliver more than 7.8 billion barrels of oil to the country over the next several years.

This figure shows some of China’s largest, most recent oil deals, with a focus on 2009 and 2010 contracts. Highlighted among those are countries currently on the U.S. Department of State’s travel warning list for “dangerous or unstable” nations.
