Republicans hold an eight-point lead in the Hawaii special election as the mail-in voting begins in the race, according to a new Honolulu Advertiser poll.
The poll shows Honolulu City Councilman Charles Djou (R) with 36 percent of the vote, former Rep. Ed Case (D-Hawaii) at 28 percent and state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa (D) at 22 percent. Just 13 percent of voters are undecided.

Why are there two Ds in the race? Do they not have primaries?
Sent my first contribution in many years to Djou. Meant that much to me, after continually rejecting RNC $$ pleas due to their RINO and lack of border control stands.
This is a winner-takes-all race because it’s a special election to replace Rep. Abercrombie who is running for the governorship.
Great! This is friggin’ great. The Dems are splitting their votes for a change instead of two Pubbies giving the Dem a free ride into office.
I LOVE IT!!!
For whatever local politics reason, anyone can run, and in this case, two 'rats decided to run same time. 'Rats are going berserk at the thought of losing the seat to a Republican, sort of like another Scott Brown earthquake.............
Did either of the democrats get the Kiss of Death? In other words, did Obama go to campaign for either of them?
It's a special election and under Hawaii rules it is winer takes all. I suspect both Dems will be running in the primary for the Nov ballot. It would take a lot for D'Jou to win again in Nov.
Ed Case is supported by the DNCC but he pissed off the locals by challenging the 80 something old Akaka saying he was unfit for office. Case is a former congressman and brother of ex AOL CEO Steve Case. The two Hawaii Senators are supporting a local candidate who is a big Lib whack job.
It's a BIG rift in the Dem party similar to the McCain/Hayworth split we have.
I blame the international Djouish conspiracy.
Yay!

@Djou4Hawaii My wife and I voted today. My major opponents will not be able to vote in this special election because neither live in the district.

You do know that the Governor of Hawaii, Linda Lingle, is a Republican, right?
Here in Georgia, a candidate must actually live in the District he runs in. I am surprised that is not the case in other states. If I were Djou, I would remind voters at the end of every campaign ad that the Dem candidates disrespect the district by choosing to live elsewhere.
You did read the post right?
I have a feeling that they will let Djou win this time around, feeling sure that any Dim who runs in November will win. That’s the reason neither Case nor Hanabusa is willing to withdraw today. Withdrawing today means conceding the seat to the other one for good.
I grew up there. My mom and dad still live there and vote in every election.
My mom’s a total dem and dads a republican. Oh lord, what I dealt with growing up in that house.....
Anyway, we were talking about this yesterday and she mentioned that Djou was probably going to win this, but its expected someone like Ed Case will take it back in Nov.
Surprisingly, she said she was sickened by Abercrombie running for governor and wanted him to stay away from the election.
Many people in Hawaii are soo sick of the “politicians for life” old boy/girl network there. Both Inouye and Akaka are in the frikin mid 80’s and still continue to believe they are the most competent to represent the state in the US senate. It’s been reported that Akaka just sleeps in his office when in DC most of the time and has to be woken up if he needs to vote on anything involving his visual presence on the floor. What a joke as well because when push comes to shove, all the dems of the state still run out to vote for these semi-comatose do-nothings.
At least with the governor race, the repubs have a strong candidate in James Aiona, the current Lt. Governor, who is already the GOP front runner.
It will be most likely be Aiona vs. Ambercrombie this Nov.
My father loaths Ambercrombie. He calls him the Male Jane Fonda.
You think Abercrombie is stronger than Hanneman? It’s gonna be similar to Hanabusa v. Case, two factions in the Dhim party fighting for power.
Aiona was great when he ran first as Lt. Gov. As a judge, he was popular—which helped Lingle. However, I have a feeling that recently he has been in a shadow. I thought Djou would be the Lt. Governor candidate, but apparently not. Perhaps the current AG, Mark Bennett, will run.
Shhhh the dems are quarelling, do not disturb their little spat.
