It’s possible that both of these things happened. Supposedly, the guy ran off when he saw the two female officers, and probably about the same time, a street vendor flagged down a mounted officer who went closer and investigated. Times Square is crawling with police, even when no “incident” has occurred.

It’s amazing that this guy would try something like this in such a place. And he nearly got away with it, too. Thank God these people (like the underwear bomber) seem to be a little incompetent. But one of these days, one of them will get lucky.
