Time to Fly Your Flag At Half Mast
Enterprise Record News Gate ^ | 5/1/10 | Chuck Wolk

Posted on 05/01/2010 3:32:29 PM PDT by Tom Hawks

On the morning of March 22, I raised my flag to the top of the 25 foot pole In my front yard.  I must have forgotten to tie it off, because when I returned later in the afternoon from presenting my Sunday message I noticed that the flag had been lowered to half mast.  That evening I watched the the House of Representatives vote on the Senate's version of the Health Care legislation.  As the remaining votes needed to pass the legislation were cast, I began thinking about the damage this legislation would do to America.  It was then that I realized it was time to fly our flags at half mast.   So I decided to leave mine where it was until I believe that God Himself has moved me to raise it back to the top.

Like me, many of my friends and relatives believe that we are experiencing what could very well be the last decades of what has been called the greatest civilization the world has ever seen.  Yes, I believe that unless we change things drastically, that the America we once knew could very well be gone forever.  I say so because, unless we gain control of congress this November by a super majority then we will never be able to overturn the Health Care bill.  Fact is, even with a Republican super majority, it will be difficult to overturn this unconstitutional law. Does everyone remember that we were never able to convict Bill Clinton and remove him from office?  I do pray that if and when a challenge to the law gets to the the Supreme Court that the conservatives will prevail and thus rule it unconstitutional.  The problem we have is the moderate conservative Justice Anthony Kennedy who has shown a propensity to.............

I also think it is fitting that they fly it on an old, rusty piece of pipe probably used to carry sewage to a nearby lake.

Not a lake, but there is an actual SuperFund Clean-up site not too far away from this house.

And that is the point the paper tiger patriots miss ... this nation is in extreme distress. Wew are even beyond where the colony was when Lexington happened. There are easy dupes who want the status quo to continue, unaware that the status quo was aborted already, that the nation is being overthrown by commie/fascist democrats and their affirmative action bastard in chief, in favor of ‘transforming AMerica’ into a european socialist state, a state which will be easy pickin’s for the Islamo murderers.

MGHinTN, I don’t view myself as a paper tiger or a summer patriot, and I don’t miss the the point.

I simply disagree with protesting in that fashion.

You are in the ‘get out of the way’ class of detritus as the Republic is being aborted.

Exactly! In fact, I don’t think the word ‘distress’ is strong enough! With the daily destruction of our Constitution in order to fulfill a radical agenda for the transformation of our country....we’ve definitely entered MAJOR crisis and are on the brink of the destruction of our Country as we know it.

I was approached about it by a neighbor who is a veteran. I thanked him for ‘checking in’ on me, thanked him for his service, and I explained that I fly my flag in distress out of RESPECT for those who fought and died for all it represents. My flag is, essentially, SCREAMING A DIRE WARNING OF THE EMINENT DEATH OF MY COUNTRY BY THE HANDS OF AN ENEMY WITHIN!!

No flag supersedes the National Ensign. So on a flag pole, any additional flag would be flown beneath it.

The Texas flag, however, is always displayed at the same height as the U.S. national colors, Texas having been a republic in her own right, and having won her sovereignty from a tyrant on the battlefield, just like the United States.

What does its owner intend to signify, do you think, by the display of this vexillary abortion?

I mean, that is really sick.

Then respond to GreenLantern if he is the one who insulted you.

Otherwise if you had bothered to read and comprehend any of what I said, you would realize there was no insult to you and your "protest."

If you cannot comprehend that some of us are not yet willing to mourn for our country or surrender to distress that again is your problem.

If you cannot comprehend that some of us completely understand we are in the heart of the battle for our very way of life...and we believe you carry the flag at full staff into battle, that again is your problem. Our military does not fly the flag at half staff going into battle and neither should we.

I've plainly and simply stated my position with nary an insult to you. The First Amendment does not protect one from being insulted or offended. And those days of holding my tongue are now very much gone!

We disagree and that is simply all there is to it. Claiming to be insulted and offended to shut-up those who oppose your protest is an underhanded tactic. My inspiration comes from Ft. McHenry and battle of 1812 that inspired the Star Spangled Banner.

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thru the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

As others have pointed out there are various flags one can fly in protest and sometimes, sometimes our own Old Glory was modified to represent the new battles and challenges in front of us.

I thought about hanging my American flag upside-down, but I didn't feel it was respectful and the media would probably make fun of people doing that, saying we didn't know how to hang a flag properly, ignoring the meaning...

Finally, I remembered a business trip I made to Philadelphia, and the visit I made to the house of Betsy Ross, and it hit me . . .

I stopped flying my flag in January of 2009. It’s not coming out till the occupation is over.

Everyone, while this post starts out as a response to what I feel is a very personal insult to me by MGHinTn, I ping all of you to this because I think it bears directly on the subject at hand, which involves far more than a personal slight.

MGHinTn, you referred to me as a "class of detritus". A type of waste or debris? THAT is what you called me? Please tell me, MGHinTn, what did I do to deserve a personal insult like THAT because I politely disagreed with you?

Do you really think it is called for to refer to someone as class of detritus just because they disagree with your assertion that flying the American flag upside down at half staff is the most valid way to protest?

Let me ask YOU, MGHinTN, What do YOU do to change things?

How many times have you done things and given money for candidates to help them out? I have given money AND time to candidates both here in my home state and in other states.

How many times have you got out on the streets to protest and counter-protest against the liberal point of view and policies you disagree with? I have, dozens of times, traveling thousands of miles WITH MY OWN MONEY to do so.

How much money and time have YOU given to support the troops? I have to the tune of thousands of my hard earned dollars, and I have stood out in front of Walter Reed to personally show my support and visited the troops.

I BITTERLY resent, BITTERLY, your characterization of ME and by extension, others like me as a "class of detritus", when YOU think that the most IMPORTANT way to protest is hanging an American flag upside down and at half-staff.

Perhaps you have done all these things I have done, and more.

But I have gone out of my way NOT to personally insult you or anyone else who wishes to protest in this manner, because it is a free country, and as a conservative, I believe that I do not have the RIGHT to tell you or those like you what to do. Even though I VIGOROUSLY disagree with that form of protest because of the way that I feel about the American flag, I have purposely muted my disagreement with those of you who feel otherwise, because YOU think it is an important way to protest.

I personally think it is disrespectful to the American flag, which stands for something. I believe that the symbolism is important.

The following is a story I have read in a variety of places, it has been in several books.

There was a pilot who was captured by the North Vietnamese o named Mike Christian. Mike came from a small town near Selma, Alabama. He didn't wear a pair of shoes until he was 13 years old. At 17, he enlisted in the US Navy. He later earned a commission by going to Officer Training School. Then he became a Naval Flight Officer and was shot down and captured in 1967.

Treatment had been harsh for many years, but as the war got closer to the end, the communists began to ease up slightly. As part of the change in treatment, the Vietnamese allowed some prisoners to receive packages from home. In some of these packages were handkerchiefs, scarves and other items of clothing. Mike got himself a bamboo needle. Over a period of a couple of months, he created an American flag and sewed on the inside of his shirt.

Every afternoon, before we had a bowl of soup, the POW's would hang Mike's shirt on the wall of the cell and say the Pledge of Allegiance.

One day the Vietnamese searched the cell, as they did periodically, and discovered Mike's shirt with the flag sewn inside, and removed it. That evening they returned, opened the door of the cell, and beat Mike Christian severely for the next couple of hours. Then, they opened the door of the cell and threw him back in. His cellmates cleaned him up as well as best as they could.

After they cleaned him up, the others looked back over at him, and sitting there with a piece of red cloth, another shirt and his bamboo needle, Mike Christian began sewing again. He was sitting there with his eyes almost shut from the beating he had received, making another American flag.

My point in telling this story is two-fold: ONE, that the American flag is MORE than a piece of cloth used for protesting, and TWO, that if those men, living in a dank concrete cell, being tortured and beaten, separated from their liberty, country, wives, families and children did not see fit to hang that hand-made American flag upside down in that rat-hole of a cell, when things were bleaker than ANY of us can imagine, we shouldn't do it here, in the light of day, when we still have some tools left to fight with.

While a Gadsen Flag may not have the shock value of an American flag hung upside-down and at half staff, I think it gets the point across fine without having to resort to using an American flag.

Do you believe this Republic is in dire trouble with the current regime in power doing the transforming of America directed toward a socialist model? ... Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

Your lengthy post seeking to raise your image from the dirt where you tossed it tells many readers just the sort of preoccupation which directs your attention. By trying to wrap your appeal in the honor of those who have served in so many ways, as if you are the arbiter of which is patriotic and when use of the flag to signal is acceptable TO YOU, well, you are showing yourself to be detritus.

BTW, what I have done for our returning troops is none of your business, nor what cost I've paid. Trott your little self pony on some other turf, poster.

Boy, you have gumption.

No, you are the one with a problem when you think that anyone who thinks it is disrespectful to display the flag in such a manner is deserving of personal insult. I have been circumspect up until now, I believe people try to protest in any way they can, and that is their business. The fact that I disagree with you hurts your itty-bitty feelings, and you resort to name calling because you can’t back up your position intellectually. It is vacuous, but it is all you know, isn’t it?

Well too damned bad. Sorry to be the adult to tell you this. Grow up and strap on a pair, because you sure sound like you need them.

I understand your kind all too well. You ARE what Thomas Paine referred to as a “summer soldier and the sunshine patriot”. I think now, however, YOUR type are referred to as “Keyboard Warriors”. Your idea of effective protest is turning the American Flag upside down and and flying it at half staff. Ooooohhh. Great Idea, MGHinTn. That will get their attention, no doubt. They will be trembling in their shoes at that one. I can just hear them now...

RAHM: “Hey...we have people like MGHinTn out there flying his flag upside down at half-staff. I think we should roll back our efforts to implement nationalized. I didn’t realize the effect our policies were having until I began to see those flags.”

OBAMA: “Yeah. I was completely clueless. I had no idea we were going against the will of the American people. We better get in line, and tell Nancy and Harry to do the same.”

You haven’t done squat but sit in front of your keyboard and pound out meaningless pap, have you? Right. You haven’t. Have you?

This poster is the sort of agitprop I was referring to a few weeks back. It is spittling dolts like this one playing at FR that prompts ‘anonymous’ when giving to our returning wounded.

Once again, ad hominem attack is the best you can do? And you have to call on Tennessee Nana for support?

Come on, MGHinTn, please explain your position in non-emotional terms. Let’s debate the issue on its merits without your calling me a poopy-head. Come on.

You can’t, can you? Because your idea of protest is all emotion, and those in government couldn’t be bothered with your form of protest. They don’t care.

But YOU somehow feel better. Good. I am glad for you.
