The woman who beat Sarah Palin for the beauty queen crown of Miss Alaska in 1984 is setting her sights on her own political career.
Maryline Blackburn, who is mounting a Democratic challenge for a seat in the House of Representatives in Georgia, was Alaskas first African American representative in the beauty pageant. She beat Sarah Palin, Miss Wasilla at the time, who finished as second runner-up in the 1984 pageant but also took home the title of Miss Congeniality.
Unlike her former beauty queen rival, Ms Blackburn, 48, a Grammynominated singer and actress is a fervent supporter of President Obama. She does, however, appear to share Ms Palins penchant for plain-speaking and self-promotion and lost no time yesterday in taking a gentle swipe as she recalled their 1984 encounter.

I had the same reaction - I thought it was Little Richard.
“I beat Sarah Palin at something in 1984, I sing and I’m black” appears to be all that’s required to run for a House seat in Georgia if you’re Democrat.
In a beauty contest with this woman NOW Sarah would win in a walk! I am always amazed at how much more beautiful Sarah is now than when she was young. She was a pretty girl but she is a fabulously beautiful woman now.
EXACTLY!!!!
And Sarah remembers Blackburn as butt ugly.
This is political correctness at it’s best.
Yep, that was definitely a factor by '84.
Apparently those Wasilla pageant judges just spent 9 months snowed into trapper’s cabins. They didn’t even notice the mustache.
I’m sorry, but that looks like a guy with lipstick and mascara on! Ick! lol
It’s the DSLs!
Why do I suspect AK was just happy to have an African American contestant and handed her the prize? She’s nowhere near pretty.
You can see the dynamics of pageant voting if you ever watch one.
The judges are mostly white. Nobody wants to be called a racist so all of them pick one black girl to be in their top 10. It is almost like a mini-contest within the contest - the best black contestant is going to be in the top 10 even if there is only 1. Then it is a matter of how many competitive white girls are in the pageant. If there are a few, the vote is split and a black girl wins and sometimes she is like Vanessa Williams and you say “Well, yeah, that’s a good pick” and sometimes you say “Huh?”
Well Ms. Blackburn, you go right ahead. But one day Sarah Palin will be President and you will not.
I am referring to Ms. Blackburn being born in Europe, but then again, I guess no one cares about the constitutional requirements anymore. Just as long as they are black and democrat. So maybe she does have a shot.
The district is an iffy one. It’s Cobb County Georgia, which is close enough to Atlanta to go for the racial vote. However it’s also comprised of a good many elderly and old conservative families in the outlying areas that tend to vote Republican.
This could go either way. It really depends on how many from the Buckhead/Northside area has moved into Cobb.
Not to mention she was calculating on how to win. Wow, Sarah Palin must be a some kind of evil woman to enter a competition (competing for a scholarship to college no less) and she actually was dedicated enough to want to win! Oh the horror!
YIKES!!!!!!!
That's not much of a stretch to believe.
Not to say she wasn't more talented and did deserve to win over Palin at the time..
But if I was forced to guess; I would say your theory is highly likely
yeah, I think it’s likely she outscored Palin on the talent end, but I will stick with my original theory. She was going to win if she couldn’t carry a tune in a two-handled bucket.
The *unt was never a governor... or anything but a media wh0re... and she can’t sing.
