I have been telling people - cancel cable and sat TV. Stop feeding the beast. Your monthly bill is divided up and it keeps them afloat.

BINGO

800,000 and counting have dropped cable and satellite - me included.

I had mine shut of in Jan 2009. I get all the programs I watched free online...and most of them on MY schedule and without the long commercials.

so that monthly money is in MY pocket - I have not missed TV at all - well, I get PBS, and locals...so I watch Masterpiece Theatre occasionally and Antiques Roadshow when I remember...but I can also get those both online... Cable/Satellite is dying - and Thank you , G_d.

My wife and I are moving in a month and will soon cancel cable. We'd have done it sooner but she is a bit of a TV addict.

Frantzie: “cancel cable and sat TV.”

Good advice. An internet connection is better than cable or satellite TV. Local news, weather, sports, etc., are all readily available over the net. Many national TV programs can be viewed online. Favorite TV series can be purchased on DVD or Blu-Ray and watched at personal convenience. I see little reason for cable or satellite any more.
