I made the case yesterday that theres still a long way to go before PR becomes number 51, but I doubt thatll comfort most of our commenters. Oh well.
Proponents say the measure gives citizens of the island the right to self-determination. Critics say the measure is a device to impose statehood on a population that doesnt want it. Thursdays action was nonbinding, and if Puerto Ricans eventually select statehood, Congress would still have to vote to admit the island to the union as the 51st state.
The issue divided Democrats and Republicans alike as liberal Democrats with ties to Puerto Rico teamed with conservative Republicans to oppose the measure.

Where the hell did this come from all of a sudden? Are the commie ‘RATS really worried that much about November?
After Puerto Rico - then Kenya!
The MSM kept this quiet. The imlpication is too obvious,
Friday afternoon news...
independence for PR!!!!! They deserve to control their own destiny and be free of us - we are holding them back.
Why are Republicans voting for this?
Would someone tell me why the FDIC shut down 3 banks in PR today to the tune of $5.28 BILLION? Statehood? Control? Check it out.
One World, World Peace everywhere, Utopia is commmmmming , thank you, thank you Master Obama
Oh, now I’m with the rest of them - Obama is holding Congress hostage - but how? Maybe he really was a CIA agent. It has to be something because Congress is rolling over like a 10 dollar whore.
Haiti before Kenya.
I don’t think they want that. They get economic benefits and military protection form us without having to pay taxes. They’ve consistently voted to maintain the status quo every time it’s been put on the ballot.

I heard about this 2 days ago on Glenn Beck.
I hope they don’t go for it though I don’t like them getting all the bennies minus paying taxes. We of the lower 48 plus the island Hawaii and Alaska would. The dems just want the PR votes.
Good question. The concept isn’t bad, but the bill is a real turd. As worded, the bill isn’t pushing them to statehood, but to a ‘third option’ of sovereignty association’.

Which is why they included ‘sovereignty assocation’. The bennies will still go to PR, but they will get senate and house representation as well.
It is one giant game of whack-a-mole with this crowd. November cannot come soon enough. A nod to Glen Beck for the heads up...
I'm not for this, but one reason could be that it would end the special tax status for PR. Something like this could blow up in the Dims' face.

I remember when Lech Walesa was elected president of Poland, the first thing he did was come straight to the US to shake Reagan’s hand. Reagan was out of office by that time, Lech didn’t care.
PR was in the news at the time discussing its options, statehood or independence. Walesa said, if they don’t want to be a state, we do. He repeated it several times just to make sure no one missed his point.
