The White House escalated its response Thursday to the growing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, as administration officials said that the disaster could prompt a rethink of President Barack Obama's recently announced proposal to allow expanded offshore oil and gas drilling.
In an afternoon appearance in the Rose Garden, Mr. Obama promised to use "every single available resource" of government to help with the spill.
Federal officials said that the slick is spreading and could make landfall as early as Friday evening. The prospects for slowing the spread of the oil appear dim.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, speaking at a White House briefing, said that the slick "is crossing different regions" and that the federal government would set up a second command center in Mobile, Ala., in addition to an existing command center in Louisiana. The leaking well took 90 days to drill and it could take another 90 days for a relief valve, intended to stop the leak, to be put in, said Deputy Interior Secretary David Hayes.
The spill, which could be one of the biggest in U.S. history, threatens to cause significant environmental damage and disruption to business along the Gulf Coast. It also could change the dynamics of an energy-policy debate in the U.S. Capitol.

Soooo
Why is this a Homeland Security issue????
Terrorism ... ??
The environmental loons have done worse to get their way.
Typical liberal Luddites. Despite decades of modern data on the relatively low risk of leaks from today’s offshore drilling technology, they’ll react to a single incident instead of to the overall facts.
Not sure it is a manufactured crisis, but it certainly falls under Rahm's "never waste a good crisis" philosophy.
Everything is a crisis for Obama. He’s a drama queen. Has he cried yet?
It’s about time.
This will be the worst environment disaster in our history when it is over.
This is Obama’s Katrina - where was he? golfing?
Obama likely didn’t order the “event,” but there are a lot of very fishy goings on surrounding this. Likewise, I don’t believe Obama is at the helm of this country anyway.
Am I the only one thinking sabotage?
White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that the future of President Obama’s proposal to allow expanded oil drilling could depend on the cause of the spill...
Obama has an open door to Podesta brothers, one of which is the no. 2 bundler for Obama and Podesta also represents BP.
I don’t rule out that he had something to do with the ‘accident’ — don’t forget how conveniently the SEC sued Goldman Sachs just in time to advance his extreme agenda on financial regulatory deform.
Why did the maoist wait so long to notice the accident?
Waiting for enough oil to threaten land before he took action?
He’s re-thinking?
Was he unaware of the possibility of oil spills when he thought the first time?
Never let a “Crisis” go to waste!
Soros didn’t tell him to think about the spills, so he didn’t.
Why does a BP owned rig, built by South Korea, blowing up in the gulf, have anything to do with US drilling?
