World's Most Powerful Supercomputer Coming to Iowa
Fox ^ | 4/28/10 | FOXNews.com

Scientists in Iowa simply can't wait to do computational chemistry at a quadrillion calculations per second.

"Petascale power is required for accuracy," said Monica Lamm, an Iowa State assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering and associate scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory who studies complex molecular binding.

"Now we have to use methods that are less accurate and less reliable."

The source of the new and improved computing power is Blue Waters, a supercomputer that's being developed as a joint effort of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, its National Center for Supercomputing Applications, IBM, and the Great Lakes Consortium for Petascale Computation, which includes Iowa State.

Theresa Windus, an Iowa State professor of chemistry and an associate of the Ames Laboratory, said higher computing power will make a big difference in her studies of atmospheric particles: "This allows us to get results we've never had before."

I do not like this one bit.

Iowa is a place for cornfields. Not super-computers.

Just think, if ISCA BBS had access to this power!

They’ve decided to call it “SkyNet”?

Iowa State was where the first Digital Computer was invented.

It’ll be used for climate calculations and other green BS. All of it useless and programmed to produce the results the great elite want.

Iowa State was involved with the first digital computers. They have a long history of computer development. We also happen to have three fine public universities in this state doing advanced research work in lots of different scientific and engineering fields.

Yes we do have lots of pigs and corn as well. Also tractor manufacturing.

I hope you were doing a little sarcasm with your post.

A quote from the ISU website.

The Atanasoff-Berry Computer was the world’s first electronic digital computer. It was built by John Vincent Atanasoff and Clifford Berry at Iowa State University during 1937-42. It incorporated several major innovations in computing including the use of binary arithmetic, regenerative memory, parallel processing, and separation of memory and computing functions.
On October 19, 1973, US Federal Judge Earl R. Larson signed his decision following a lengthy court trial which declared the ENIAC patent of Mauchly and Eckert invalid and named Atanasoff the inventor of the electronic digital computer — the Atanasoff-Berry Computer or the ABC.

I don't know about that. What I do know is that I like to visit the Cedar Rapids/Marion area and there is this great bike path that runs through that area. When I walk down that bike path, there is nothing but corn fields. It's a great place to just walk and last time I was out there, I walked a good 14 miles (7 miles out and back) listening to pretty much the entire Pink Floyd catalog on my iPod. During my walk, the tornado alarm system went off (right during "The Great Gig In The Sky") and it was a very surreal moment in my life.

Bottom line is that I associate Iowa with corn field, Pink Floyd and tornadoes. Not supercomputers. Supercomputers are associated with MIT and Caltech and they are operated by middle-aged men with white coats and pocket protectors.

Until the bridges were damaged by the floods you could take the bike trails all the way from Cedar Rapids to Cedar Falls (over 70 miles) and never have to travel on roads. A few years ago my border collie and I ran it (at least from Evansdale to Hiawatha) over three consecutive weekends (ie about 18-20 miles/day for three Saturdays). It was great.

Check out the bike trails in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls metro area sometime. They are wonderful. Of course they exist because we are so liberal in this state (never saw anything like it in red Tennessee). In Tennessee I had to carry a hand gun for protection from dogs.

Yeah, it was a shame about the Cedar Rapids floods a couple years ago. I've got family from that area and things will never be the same.

I'm a big fan of bike paths (we call them rail trails back east) and I get angry that they are associated with liberals. I was actively involved in getting the Bruce Freeman bike trail developed through my town (Chelmsford, MA) and many of the people helping it get done were conservatives.

Many conservatives around here hate them. I contribute to our trail fund every year, but in no way do I contribute what I get back from them.

We have plenty of cornfields. But we also invented the the worlds first digital computer at Iowa State, so glad to this news.
And on the bike path subject; wow, we have a great network of them here in central Iowa.
You should come out and try our sweet corn and bike paths this summer.

So Iowa State should go elsewhere?

Lot’s of good research from there.
