TOPEKA - The estranged son of a controversial Kansas pastor encouraged people to feel sympathy for members of his father's church, "at least for the young children stuck in that situation."
Nate Phelps, 51, spoke in Topeka over the weekend, marking his first trip in 20 years to the city where his father, Fred Phelps, runs Westboro Baptist Church.
He alleged that he endured fear, intimidation and abuse before leaving the family and church on his 18th birthday.
He said that while society is quick to take steps to protect children, it seems "curiously blind" when religious beliefs jeopardize a child's safety. He also predicted that the group would die out eventually.
None of its members picketed the speech.
Westboro Baptist members, many of them Fred Phelps' children and grandchildren, have conducted anti-homosexual pickets in Topeka and other cities since 1991. They have been protesting at soldiers' funerals in recent years, saying military deaths were the work of a wrathful God who punishes the United States for tolerating homosexuality.

Phelps group is a cult.
Well he abuses and terrorizes the rest of the world on a regular basis. Myself as a Southern Baptist resent him using the name on his- ahem “establishment” I refuse to call it a church.
Phelps is a demon.
That’s a surprise.
Yes. And I’m a Baptist. Phelps ain’t no Baptist.
Although one can never know another’s heart, it can be apparent by one’s actions where their heart lies. This alleged person is no Baptist and it is doubtful he has ever even read a Bible. The man acts as a demon.
I feel sorry for those kids, but not the rest of those SOB’s.
Where is Child Protective Services when you need them?
ever see his daughter?
Pretty obvious there’s some inbreeding going on in that family.

Well, I don't like him either and/or his group, but even so, that doesn't mean it's not a "church" as is defined by our Constitution.
With some of these so-called churches, I think that's unfortunate, as I see a lot of cult groups out there, including cult groups represented right here on Free Republic. And I don't think they should be legitimate "churches" either -- but yet they are, under the Constitution.
So, whether it's Wiccans or a cult group like Mormons or Jehovah's Witnesses or even Buddhists or even the deadly group, Muslims... they are still legally "churches" under the law.
And, like I said, it's unfortunate, because the way I see it some of these groups I mentioned should be stripped of their church designation, but that's the situation we have with our Constitution, unfortunately.
Phelps is a demon.
And likewise for other cult groups in this country and even here on this board. They are "demons" too, as they teach anti-Christian and anti-God doctrines and teachings... what the Bible calls ... "doctrines of demons" (that's exactly how it is said).
There is a lot of teaching of "doctrines of demons" even going on in the religious threads, too..., unfortunately, according to what the Bible's teachings are.
Correct.
I was thinking Fred was ordained as a Primitive Baptist, perhaps I am mistaken. When I lived back east I had some exposure to them; I was enthralled by their unabashed acceptance of Mark 16 “ These signs shall follow”....
I saw a 13 -14 year old girl at a deliverance speaking in in bizarre voices several men struggled to hold down.
I was never around snake handlers although I am familiar with rattlers and copperheads and they can be as tame as any other snake.
I’ve also been to the WBC compound before. They are in fact a cult but they are a brilliant group- most of the children became attorneys even after Fred was disbarred. They are sharp Biblically and Constitutionally and are not slackers. But their gospel is one of hate, not forgiveness and love.
The devil joined the church early on so as to deceive the sheep wherever he could.
Interesting ...
But he is a democrat......

The Constitution doesn’t define what a church is.
