Rove says he has "problems" with AZ immigration law

THE VILLAGES – Karl Rove, chief political strategist for former President George W. Bush, today questioned a controversial new Arizona law designed to cut down on illegal immigration by making it a crime to not produce proof of citizenship when a law enforcement officer demands it.

Rove, speaking to a crowd of about 500 at the mammoth senior community as part of a national book tour, said that while the law is understandable, it does present difficulties. The law has become the nation’s toughest anti-immigration measure.

“I think there is going to be some constitutional problems with the bill,” he said to the standing-room-only crowd at the Colony Cottage Recreation Center. “I wished they hadn’t passed it, in a way.”

U.S. businesses profiting from a slave labor force with illegal aliens

“Regardless of which party is in control, the federal government will largely continue to turn a blind eye to the problem of illegal immigrant labor. Of course, many American businessmen who hire illegal aliens, contribute a great deal of money to candidates from both the Republican and Democratic parties. As far as the leadership of either party is concerned, there is no problem.”

I read somewhere that for every 100 illegal aliens in the USA, 68 legal residents (which includes citizens and legal residents) are displaced from jobs. IOW 32% unemployment is directly attributable to illegals in that group.

Exactly. Read the SB1070 in its entirety today. Within the actual text, a couple of times it specifically says that execution of the law must remain consistent with existing federal law.

Rove is one of the reasons Obama is in the White House.

I have always despised him.

Interesting. I am not good at math, but that seems like a very high number of illegals... and I am NOT doubting you.

Rove says he has "problems" with AZ immigration law

Rove is lying, he hates the new law.

I'd love to be able to buy homes next door to Bush, Rove, McCain and Graham and then move about 100 illegals into each one. I think it would be quite the learning experience for them.

He is right in that there will be Constitutional arguments only in the sense that the national borders are a federal matter, not state.

Arizona will argue that they are not patrolling the border. They are dealing with people in the interior of the state who are here illegally. They will also cite the federal law that grants the states the power to do so.

Yep, I read all 17 pages of it ... I wish Rubio had doe that.

The law also states that cities cannot do less than what is ordered by federal law. No sanctuary cities.

If all the southern states such as Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Alabama Georgia & Florida would follow suit with this law immediately it would really throw the Feds off. This is a perfect opportunity to go on offense!

“Rove, still an unabashed BIG-GOVERNMENT, AMNESTY-PUSHING LIAR.”

That covers it.

That figures. Hey Rove, we’re broke and we can’t afford to carry all of the dead weight anymore. The people of AZ are under attack and are fearing for their lives and property.

Oh, you just want to give them all amnesty? Go away Karl.

a controversial new Arizona law designed to cut down on illegal immigration by making it a crime to not produce proof of citizenship when a law enforcement officer demands it.

I'm not at all sure that this is an accurate statement of the new law.

a) The officer has to have "reasonable suspicion" (actually a technical legal term) that you are not a citizen to even quiz you

b) Of course, he could have that, and simply be wrong;

c) As I understand it, he can quiz you, and if he THEN has "probable case" (another technical term) to think you are illegal, he could arrest you, but "producing proof of citizenship" isn't part of it.

If you are a citizen, you can probably convince him by talking and answering questions. And, of course, you may be a non-citizen, but be legal (greencard, visitor visa, etc.).

But, it does raise the question of, in your example, how does the license info show that you are a citizen? -- an illegal might have a license, or be driving someone else's car with permission; or, the person might have a bad record, but still be a citizen?

How should a citizen react if a cop treats him with "reasonable suspicion" or says he does? what proof can you offer, or argue?

This law will cost more in legal fees to defend than it will save in serving as a deterrent to illegal entry.

As I read it, its just ten thousand “that cop violated my civil rights by assuming my brown skin was probable cause to..” cases waiting to happen.

All AZ's law does is enforce existing federal law, The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

But it's easier not to read the bill and use straw-man and ad-hominem attacks.
