Polk makes the list, even though he was fairly passive and just went along with whatever congress wanted, and Reagen doesn’t make the list at all. Polk, Truman and Ike are middle of the pack. Not bad, but not top ten material either.

Polk, Truman and Ike are middle of the pack.

I can agree about Polk.

Truman, on the other hand.... He was the guy who finally stood up to Stalin and initiated the Cold War, and took us into the Korean War -- both decisions still resonate today.

Ike was a very deceptive fellow. He cultivated a sort of bumbling grandfather image, but in fact he was apparently a very canny operator whose Cold War leadership was decisive. If Truman got us into it, it was Ike who really created the overall structure of the system that eventually won the Cold War.

But of course, these lists really only reflect the personal interests of the folks who create them.
