WASHINGTON — Amid mounting frustration over taxation and banking problems, small but growing numbers of overseas Americans are taking the weighty step of renouncing their citizenship.

“What we have seen is a substantial change in mentality among the overseas community in the past two years,” said Jackie Bugnion, director of American Citizens Abroad, an advocacy group based in Geneva. “Before, no one would dare mention to other Americans that they were even thinking of renouncing their U.S. nationality. Now, it is an openly discussed issue.”

It will get worse before it gets better.

I’d never renounce my citizenship, but I might go on hiatus:

What is the purpose of renouncing citizenship?

I have been a full time expat for over five years, but I do draw SS.
I see no reason to renounce, even though I do think
America is pretty much finished as the country that I
grew up in.

Ive been doing the Expat thing for about half the year since 2005. I enjoy the personal freedom you find in the the third world countries of southeast asia. I can see myself doing it full time eventually but I would never renounce my American citizenship.
I would recommend it to those who may be able to do it for a few months a year, it clears your head and puts things in better perspective here.

Cowards. Traitors. Good riddance to them all.

It is probably getting harder for them taxwise. I spent a decade out of the country; I get the whole “perspective” thing. But I just love this country too much to take such a step. While I fear for the future of this country, I have hope that we can withstand the current socialist assault. It will be a good precedent for future generations, to show that we are stronger than they are. We can win.

And our win means more freedom for everyone, even the losers. You couldn’t even GET a Barack Obama without a free republic like this one.

Give it up, pussies!

Save a dollar and give your soul.

Don’t DARE ask for citizenship back when we stay and fight for that what was given us.

I don’t care what they do, I am willing to die trying to get it all back for us, our future and the honor of our past.

I have no smiles or understanding for those who run.

Most people do not understand that these are a unique group that are very wealthy with high incomes and most of their assets already overseas.

They are openly courted by a number of nations that will welcome their wealth to boost the host economy. They will always be considered foreigners, but be treated extremely well and lead the sweet life. All for less than their no longer applicable US income tax bill.

A smaller subset are less wealthy, but hold dual citizenship, possibly due to careful planning by their parents. These individuals and spouses get an even better deal.

In a few years, they may control a large part of the foreign corporation that the ordinary American works for in his Obamajob.

Senate bill 3081 will eliminate the overseas tax exemption (section 911 of the IRS code) - Form 2555).

http://gregg.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/S3018.pdf

According to Senators Wyden (D-OR) and Gregg (RINO-NH) it will eliminate the advantage of working overseas to bring American workers and companies home to increase competiveness.

The new banking regulations will make having an bank account in the EU (I’m based in the Netherlands) impossible, as 0bama’s HIRE act - signed March 18 is in violation of most EU countries’ privacy laws. Or we face an automatic 30% withholding that goes directly to the US treasury, or account closure.

What are these “expatriates” really giving up?

Traditional America is all but dead, and Ubanga and the rats are intent on finishing it off. The USA is now the USSA, as Ubanga and the rats are accelerating their push to turn the nation into a European-style socialist welfare state.

I can’t blame these “expatriates”, not at all.

Most of this group already have their assets outside the US.

Zer0's prostitution of the dollar won't help, they have already or can quickly convert to more stable currencies.

However, the prostitution of the dollar will hurt the US and US government influence as the dollar is replaced as currency of trade in commodity and lending markets worldwide.

The US will be bypassed for much economic activity, and will slip into a deep depression with rampant inflation at the same time.

There simply isn't enough to steal to pull us out.

You're on the right track.

This is simply a battle. The Marxists want to use government to confiscate the wealth of citizens as well as expats. The expats want to keep it. The winner gets the wealth.

Each side has a tactical plan.

The expats have tactically gained an advantage by removing the wealth and themselves from the control of the US government. They do not have to battle in a kangaroo court that is controlled by the US government.

As you know, tactical plans do not last long after the initial engagement, and the expats are simply adapting to the change in government tactics. They try to gain entry climbing the rope and grapple of citizenship, the expats adapt tactics and cut the rope. The goal is victory, and to the victor go the spoils.

The expats have simply planned better than resident citizen targets.

Hatred born of envy is the classic Marxist tool.

I worry for my little sister and family. I hope she does not do this. I fear we are in such an unstable situation in the world which could precipitate world war. I pray she does not renounce her citizenship and that of her children. She may need to come HOME in order to protect their lives.

I’m sorry... do you think there will be open fighting? how quaint.

America is already gone. when you work 65-80% of your life in order to pay for some social program that brings in votes for a progressive... you are just a slave keeping 20-35% for yourself

when they started confiscating businesses and stealing my money (ie: taxpayer)... to pay off someoneelses mortgage or car payments. that’s when it’s pretty much over.

I wouldn’t quite call it ‘quaint’.

Do I think there will be open fighting?

There already is, my dear.

“I worry for my little sister and family. I hope she does not do this.”

Do what?
As for giving up citizenship, I still do not know what is to be gained by doing it, other then a lot of trouble.
What does one do for a passport, unless they have been made a citizen of some other country.
No one can be without a country, even if it is crappy.
The whole idea sounds loony to me.

I do, however, see plenty of reasons to move offshore to another country to wait and see what happens.
In my case, I am past 65 and have a girlfriend. I see no reason why I would ever return to live there, even if Obozo is dethroned.
America will never return to the way it was when I was growing up, then running a business.
Also, I live on a tiny fraction of what it cost to live in the USA.
