Protection from an EMP attack which the Iranians are reported to be practicing for use on the USA. Just one nuke 200 miles above the US could 'fry' every electronic component in the country. No more electricity, cars, planes, trains, etc.
Some estimates have 90% of the US population eventually dying in such an attack.

I'm not positive, but I think that some very old vehicles, including planes, just might survive, if they are pre-integrated circuit/transistor. (Cars with contact point ignition for example).

Functioning power after an EMP attack might stick out like a sore thumb.

The frightening thing about an EMP attach is the hundreds of millions of transformers and electrical sub stations that will be hard to replace with no infrastructure to repair them or make new ones. There isn’t a strategic reserve of them that we can just whip out new ones.

What would happen to nuclear plants I wonder? Hmm the controls don’t seem to be working...

I don't think EMP is the big 800 lbs gorilla it is made out to be. Most cars have their own Faraday cages via their metal bodies, but if you own a Corvette, you could be in trouble. I really think most cars will still run and radio works but you're right about the power grid. Your car will most likely still run but unless you came pump gas with a generator supplying power, a 12 volt pump or a hand pump, you're outta luck. It's more like a 500 lbs gorilla, it is to be feared but it won't kill everything but it will cause a lot of disruption to the point where everything could collapse.
