A very serious situation is unfolding today as all the necessary ingredients are coming together for a destructive tornado outbreak.
You can follow the latest news and developments throughout the day concerning this tornado outbreak on weather.com's News and Development's page.
Several tornadoes are likely across the states of Mississippi and Alabama. Some of these tornadoes will be long-tracking, large tornadoes.
It's just not MS and AL however, adjacent states including Louisiana, Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee will also be under the gun for powerful tornadoes, large hail and destructive winds.
Some cities in the target zone today include Lexington (KY), Bowling Green (KY), Nashville (TN), Memphis (TN), Jackson (TN), Birmingham (AL), Tuscaloosa (AL), Jackson (MS), Meridian (MS), Tupelo (MS), Pine Bluff (AR) and Little Rock (AR).

It looks pretty bad on radar near Bowling Green, KY.
Thank you very much! Can’t get a hold of my kids (why do they never answer the cell when you’re calling with important info?), but hopefully their school is keeping on top of this ...
You can see the camera shake on the street signs, and the flag looks like it was moving on top of that. A little bit longer exposure (1/20-1/50 second, who knows), but whoever took it held the camera pretty well for the circumstances.
Tornado Warning for Cullman, Alabama.
Did that miss you to the east? (I hope)
Actually, my home is near Chattanooga. We've got a strong one at the edge of Hamilton county now. But the mountains may break it up. I'm in Jacksonville so I'm going to miss most of the bad weather, I think.
Looks like there'll be some storms in Nashville, though that really nasty line seems to have spread out a bit. Meaning, it might not be as bad. <
Caveat - I'm not a meteorologist, but I play one on the internet.
Prayers for everyone in danger.
I think our death toll in Mississippi is up to nine now.
Severe Thunderstorm for the Mt. Vernon, IL area:
Prayers up for all in the path of these monstrous storms. I know how devastating tornadoes can be.
Praying safe shelter for all in harm’s way.
My mom is in Meridian MS and my step dad works at a Hospital in Starkville MS...this is the email I recvd from her just a little whle ago...
“checking in...bad bad weather Mike called from Starkville and said the hospital is jammed packed from tornado victims emergency room standing room only, all surgeries are full, they found 7 week old baby...he didn’t make it =( massive head injuries and they can’t find the parents, they think maybe the Dad is in surgery but not positive. We had a tornado here but didnt touch down...I was in a huge metal building with tons of glass and it got pretty rough.”
I wandered through the night looking for loved ones after a huge tornado hit Wichita falls in 79. Prayers for all affected.
Oh, that is so sad. Prayers up!
God be with Mississippi tonight and all parts of the southern US that are threatened by these storms. Have we heard from WKB yet?
Nope, and I haven’t seen posts by any others from here either. Prayers for all and for all in the wake of this weather.
I didn’t realize that Meridian was getting hit as well by a different part of the storm. I was so focussed on Yazoo all day. Did Starkville get hit too? It sounds like French Camp was hit very bad as well.
I don’t know. I am going to ping NerdDad and others I have already pinged. I think ND lives up in the northern part in Columbus and VVD lives up in the northern part too. Neighbor across the street says our friends in Starkville are a-okay.
Oh good about Starkville! So many college students there. That could have had some parents and kids in a panic had that been hit too.I am headed to bed soon but please ping me if you hear from any of our Ms. FReepers. I will be sleeping with my prayer candle lite for all in the path of this storm tonight and those already affected by it.
Hoping and praying all will be ok.
Wait, I am NOT saying Starkville is a-okay, just that our friends are,(former neighbors) according to the neighbor across the street, who is already looped. I don’t have any idea about the damage in that area or about Meridian’s either. My husband is a watching a movie and we won’t see the news until 10:00PM.
