I witnessed this in a Federal School program (during the summer) that I was teaching in. It was only open to ESL students, which of course in this area all speak Spanish. Most of the kids were born in the US or had been here a while. (Grade School). When they put the US v Mexico soccer game on TV at lunch. All of the kids, I do mean almost every single one, was cheering for Mexico and when I asked some why, it was because they were “Mexican”.

This attitude is rampant, sadly. I can cite two examples similiar to yours.

A Mexican who served in the U.S. Military to gain citizenship was asked if he would be willing to fight for his country again. His response, “which country”?

Another is my of my neighbors, Hispanics whose ancestors were here over 400 years ago, yet their grandson wears tennis shoes with the Mexican flag on them. He can’t even speak Spanish!

Everybody wants to belong to something but being an American is on the back burner for most minorities today. There is no loyalty to this country anymore for too many.
