Environmentalism Contaminates Conservationism

I applaud President Obama’s push for conservation but I am discouraged by those put in place to execute. This push for conservation is called America’s Great Outdoors Initiative which was signed this month on the 16th. It’s the largest land bill initiative since the days of FDR. Good stewardship of our land is vital. While I disregard all notions of man-made global warming, the hunter in me strongly believes in the mission of the Safari Club International, a global hunting organization, that stands up for conservation everywhere.

Straight from the SCI website:“Every member of SCI is a conservationist on many levels. From their membership dollars that go to support the SCI Foundation’s global activities, to their local chapter projects, to their support of federal and local game and fish agencies through purchase of licenses and sporting equipment, members of SCI are conservationists of the best kind.”

While I am motivated by the concept behind the new land bill let me tell you why I’m discouraged. To handle this initiative the President has identified the Secretaries of the Interior and Agriculture, the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Chair of the Council of Environmental Quality. You tell me where conservation fits into any of these organizations. It doesn’t. These are a bunch of radical environmentalists that are driving for devastating legislation like cap and trade. These are individuals who will put their radical agendas above all, not in the name of the environment, but in the name of power.

President Obama, if you really cared about the environment, conservation and preserving our National parks, put the REAL conservationists in charge, they would be Americas hunters, Ranchers and Farmers, we were “green” before “green” was cool. Not the environmental tree-huggers. Keep the contaminates out of conservation!

Urban liberals know nothing about what goes on out here in flyover country.

Genesis 1
27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

“increase in number”
“fill the earth and subdue it”
“rule over every living creature”

I grew up in rural Wisconsin in the 50s and 60s. Back then, my Grandfathers and Father taught me "Conservationism" and it was reinforced by my membership in the Boy Scouts of America.

We were the "plaid shirt-wearing Hicks from the Sticks" that the urban, liberals delighted in making fun of...until "ecology" was invented and became chic.

Today's "Greens" are a bunch of ignorant, superstitious, hysterics without a single, cogent understanding of the wild.

I live in the country by choice. Why live in urban liberal filth when I can step outside, breathe fresh air, and listen to birds singing?

Today's "Greens" are a bunch of ignorant, superstitious hysterics without a single cogent understanding of the wild.

You get the "WBill's Quote of the Day" Award for that one.

All of the eco-nuts I went to college with were all from Boston. Closest that they ever got to the wilderness was skiing down some well-groomed trail with 50 other people. (they all came to Maine for the skiing, dunno why. must be a hippie thing).

They looked down their noses at us country guys who grew up hunting and fishing in the woods, and who had forgotten more about being "green" than AlGore and his acolytes ever professed to know.

I remember one fool in my class who was astonished to see a Moose. A real honest-to-goodness Moose. On the way to class. You'd think that he just saw Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster ballroom dancing, or something.

It wasn't too impressive a spectacle to me, as I'd just seen more moose than I could count while on a fishing trip. We used to need to boot them out of our camp; they'd walk around stepping on stuff. They could make an awful mess.

If you want to protect wildlife, the first step is to put a hunting season on them.

Every single animal with a legal regulated hunting season is increasing in number and their habitat is protected by sportsmen who pay the tab.

The other day I mentioned to a liberal cousin that there had been two turkeys in my neighbor’s yard. He told me he thought turkeys were extinct in Michigan. The fact is that Michigan has opened up even more turkey hunting to get the population under control.

I just stepped out on the porch and spooked a great blue heron that was perched on an old dock post sticking out of the water.

“their habitat is protected by sportsmen who pay the tab.”

Funny how the free market even fixes the environment :)

My relatives back in Maine (I've left the state now) have a pretty good number of wild turkeys on their property.

They pick out a couple each year to harvest for Thanksgiving / Christmas. Keeps the population down, and makes for good eating.

I've no idea about hunting regs. Doubt that they do either, or if they do, I doubt they care. So long as they're on their own property (they are, they've got a really large farm) and not overhunting (they're not), it's just sensible.

And the Herons are an impressive bird. There used to be a pair of them in the beaver pond next to my house back in Maine.

Amen, Brother! Amen! I live in the country as well. My son was terrified when his Mother, now my ex-spouse, talked about moving to the big city. We are happy in the country.
