Second, more powerful Icelandic volcano likely to explode soon
daily beast ^ | 4/21/10 | Martin Hickman

Despite grounding 100,000 flights across Europe , battering a beleaguered airline industry, stranding hundreds of thousands of travellers, disrupting schools and businesses, and giving homes under flight paths their first peace and quiet in decades, the current volcano eruption may be only a teaser of chaos to come.

A far bigger Icelandic volcano, Katla, is tipped to erupt in the coming months, potentially causing much more savage and sustained disruption to industry and society. Eyjafjallajokull erupted on 14 April, forcing European governments to impose a no-fly zone. Each time Eyjafjallajokull has erupted in the past 2,000 years – in 920, in 1612 and between 1821 and 1823 – Katla has exploded within six months.

Sure was. Came right on the heels of Obama making his ridiculous statement. And now this...

0bama will eventually be humbled like few have ever been humbled.

I find myself cheering for the Volcano's. I know its wrong but seeing the Earth demonstrate in no uncertain terms that humans are not in charge around here brings me a sort of guilty pleasure. It just goes to show how farcical all this Gia cult / global warming crap is. A volcano cannot be appeased by throwing it virgins, and it can't be appeased by driving a Toyota Prius. So all you greenies who think you can control nature get a good look. Nature controls you. Now all you greenies please get back to picking up trash or doing something for the environment that might actually be useful. Not because you are saving the Earth (It can take care of itself quite nicely thank you) but because it makes peoples lives on the Earth a bit more pleasant.

POST OF THE DAY, MY FRIEND.

I believe that too, and have predicted it from the very beginning. History will not look kindly on him. Neither will most of the American people.

You’re right. 0bama will go down in history as a very, very bad man. I simply call him evil. And, we must not bear false witness.

Thanks for the info on Laki. Let’s hope that one doesn’t blow, too.

I just heard that Laki would probably be 10 times more powerful.

I’ve been chuckling at the news talking heads who have been referring to “the volcano that just erupted”. They don’t dare try the pronunciation.

Eyjafjallajökull is a small glacier just west of the medium sized Mýrdallsjökull which hosts the better known volcano Katla.

Eyjafjallajökull has its own, smaller, caldera which last erupted almost 200 years ago, and seems to have erupted every couple of hundred years ago in the last millennia. The magma system is part of the fissure running from Heimaey up to Katla and on north, and is very active. Since the volcano is sub-glacial, any significant eruption will be accompanied by flash melting and shattering of the ice cap, and associated jökulhlaup - the wall of water coming down as the eruption starts, which can be tens of meters high and scour a strip many kilometers wide, with peak flow levels larger than the Mississippi in full flood.

To make things more exciting, the magma system may be tightly enough coupled to Katla, that eruptions pair - Katla is bigger and meaner, and historically erupts a couple of times per century. It last erupted 92 years ago.

A couple of time per 100,000 years Eyjafjallajökull seems to undergo major explosive eruptions.

HOW TO MAYBE CONSTRUCT A MNEMONIC TO PRONOUNCE IT:

Haha, actually they would and would have to be very ashamed of themselves, as we take such things VERY, VERY seriously. Has to do with protecting the language unspoiled, so we can read 1000 year old sagas without much difficulty. It is, in fact our most important national heritage, the language and thus proper use of it is fiercely protected.

The word basically means Eyja (island) fjalla (mountains) jökull (glacier), and Mýr (wetland) dals (valley) jökull (glacier).

But i understand it sounds all gibbledegukk to english speakers ;)

Thanks again, Liefur!

None of those other eruptions happened when people and stuff flew all over the place in airplanes; nor was everything a finely tune JIT economy where everything depends on everything else working just right, just in time, and having to move very quickly.

Just sayin.

"Gibbledegukk"???

Is that Icelandic for gobbledygook? Yeah, we're all having a helluva time getting our tongues around those Icelandic names.

Yep. I saw the same data. Scary, if it blows. It would severely impact the US.

I don't watch TV news, but I was joking to my wife yesterday that all the talking heads must be avoiding the name of that volcano like the plague.

They're too damned pc to just settle on an easily pronounceable Anglicized version. Can't do that! Might be seen as "insensitive"! Plus, they'd also have to get the accent down perfectly, for just that one word.

Sheeeesh....

Well, ..giving us a chance at what ? might be a good question...more like a heads up folks.

I just think God has tolerated the entire world long enough....He has spoken many times, places and throughout history to us... and still look at the world we have made before Him. Even the youth today understand things just are not right....they may not recognize what to do about it, because there are no standards from many parents or adults, but they know.
