Obama floats a VAT: Admission explains attempt to alter tax pledge

President Obama made it official today : He is open to the imposition of a Value-Added Tax (VAT) on the American people. A VAT would violate Obama’s central campaign promise – a “firm pledge” that no family making less than $250,000 per year would see “any form of tax increase”.

Obama’s admission came during an interview with CNBC’s John Harwood. Asked if he could see the potential for a VAT, the President said:

"I know that there's been a lot of talk around town lately about the value-added tax. That is something that has worked for some countries. It's something that would be novel for the United States. And before, you know, I start saying 'this makes sense or that makes sense,' I want to get a better picture of what our options are.”

Obama’s VAT admission may explain his recent attempts to alter the terms of his central campaign promise. Twice in the past two weeks, Obama has claimed his middle class tax pledge only applied to income taxes rather than “any form of taxes”.

In his April 10 Weekly Radio Address, Obama said:

“And one thing we have not done is raise income taxes on families making less than $250,000. That’s another promise we’ve kept.”

In a speech on the evening of April 15, Obama repeated the truncated promise:

“And one thing we haven’t done is raise income taxes on families making less than $250,000 a year -- another promise that we kept.”

Does anybody really believe a word that comes from this man's lips anymore?

What amazes me...is that you’d tend to start with massive cuts across the board. You’d tell the Pentagon to prepare to move out of South Korea. You’d tell the education department to trim thirty percent of its budget. You’d tell all GS employees under the age of 35 that their pension program is cut in half and we double up on your 401k program...easing them off government pensions. Then you’d turn to foreign countries and just smile as you cut half the entire budget for foreign “donations”. All this could be done in 30 days...and we’d just give up on this entire game of more taxes. For some reason, no one wants to discuss cuts.

I’ll even add this to the mess...we could actually tell congress to limit it’s in-session episodes to 100 days a year, and turn off the AC or heat for the other 265 days a year. Tell the guys to go back home and actually talk to real people...instead of media dopes in DC.

Don’t you remember Charles Krauthammer’s “Obama Rule #2”? All of Obama’s promises come with an expiration date.

Wasn’t it two whole days ago that he said ‘no never’ to a VAT? This guy lies about his lies within his lies.

Actually the fed gov’t pension program had that happen 20+ years ago, except for the ‘double up 401K. FERS replace the old system, now your federal pension is primarily what you get from social security (into which the old system folks did not pay) and the Thrift Savings Plan.

Absolutely. This effects even folks who live in the projects. Of course this also will encourage the black market and theft.

““And one thing we have not done is raise income taxes on families making less than $250,000. That’s another promise we’ve kept.” “

Anyone else notice this little word called “income?” I don’t recall him saying he wouldn’t raise INCOME taxes on people who make under $250,000, but taxes at all, of any kind.

He’s changing what he’s saying slightly just to make it look like he is doing what he said. This is a typical ploy used by narcissistic cons. Making you think YOU are the one at fault for not listening carefully enough.

Would any new form of tax have to be ratified by the states?

For those who want to show folks (yes, if you get tied into a debate with a liberal) that Obama DIDN’T just say “income tax”, he said “NOT ANY OF YOUR TAXES.” Of course he we all know his slippery answer will be “technically YOU aren’t being taxed, only those greedy corporations. Sorry if you have to pay more money for stuff because of the VAT though.”

“The illegal ususrper will be removed from office before he ever gets a VAT in....”

Who will? Congress won’t. A VAT is as good a deal as “HealthCare”..in fact, WITHOUT a VAT they really CAN”T begin to fund “HealthCare”....and Congress needs to have its toys to play with!! Oh yes we’ll get a VAT....

While your idea sounds good in theory consider just this one example. It doesn't take a lot of browsing to find opinions on how the Obama Administration is hellbent on the destruction of Israel. Just imagine what would happen if they were to announce tomorrow that Israel's foreign aid would be cut in half. Even if it were couched in the context of cutting everyone's aid the screaming would be so loud you'd hear it at your house.

And that's just one example. Cut the Education budget by 30% you hate children. Cut Medicare, you're killing seniors. Withdraw from Europe, you're turning your back on your allies. You get the idea. At this time there isn't a politician in the country willing to take that kind of heat, they would rather default first and say it was forced on them by some unnamed debt holders.

Yes it is interesting how he is reframing the debate by claiming he said he wouldn’t raise INCOME taxes....

that is not what You Tube Videos show...some tech savy freepers need to download em before he gets them scrubbed....

He will use the same old tired excuse... "I inherited this mess, therefore the only solution is to implement the VAT"

Bush's fault.

The destruction of America proceeds at warp speed. I don’t know if we can survive until 2012.

If we keep our 41 seats in the Senate, we may have a chance.
