Arizona gives 'birthers' a dim flicker of hope
Los Angeles Times / latimes.com ^ | April 19, 2010 | 6:19 pm | -- Jon Healey

How 'bout that Arizona legislature? Demonstrating that the best political myths have half lives that rival some radioactive isotopes, the state House of Representatives advanced legislation that would require future presidential candidates -- say, Barack Obama in 2012 -- to prove that they are citizens before their names can appear on the state's ballot. The proposal, which must still be considered by the state Senate, would require national political parties to submit "documents that prove that the candidate is a natural-born citizen, prove the candidate's age and prove that the candidate meets the residency requirements for president of the United States as prescribed in Article II, Section 1, Constitution of the United States." It goes on to give the Arizona secretary of state the discretion to keep a candidate's name off the ballot if he or she has "reasonable cause" to believe the candidate doesn't meet those requirements.

Apologies if this has been posted already, I did a search first.

The author erroneously thinks that just being born in the U.S. is enough (per the 14th Amendment).

The media in this country is a disgrace. I used to think lawyers were the lowest form of life, but they are good folk compared to msm types.

Damn....that means if I run for president, I will lose
the electoral votes of Arizona?

I am a naturalized citizen, not a natural born citizen.
Damn Damn!!

Barack’s 1976 Form SS-5, Application for Social Security Number, is filed as a legal alien.

Barack gave up his US Citizenship to become an Indonesian National. When the Soetoro adoption was annulled, his name was changed back to Barack Hussein Obama II and a new COLB was filed with the Hawai`i DoH.

Barack’s SSN application has a Connecticut return address because that is where his refugee resettlement sponsor is located. The resettlement sponsor handled all of Barack’s legal paperwork for him on his behalf.

I wonder what the LA Times thinks about the McCain “birthers” - you know, the congresscritters who actually held a congressional hearing because they were concerned that perhaps the circumstances of John McCain’s birth made him ineligible to be POTUS.

“Arizona gives ‘birthers’ a dim flicker of hope”

How could that headline even be possible after it was insisted by the MSM and those who cave easily that there was absolutely no issue at all???

“How ‘bout that Arizona legislature?”

Hip Hip Hooray!

See Philip Berg's futile challenge to Obama's election for more potential birther arguments.

If I remember correctly Berg’s arguments were never heard. He was ruled not to have standing to sue.

Given that this information is constitutionally required I fail to see why the LA times would object.

From the article,”Chances are the federal courts would toss out the law for being an unconstitutional imposition of state eligibility requirements on federal candidates.”
Hmm,so proving you fill the constitutional requirements to fill the position is somehow unconstitutional?

Every state in this union should pass such legislation. Remove the doubt..and if need be, the poseur-in-chief.

They are just trying to stay out of the hot seat. They need to show the video they have of Obama at that Palestinian fundraiser - you know, the one where everyone was talking about killing the Jews.

It’s a damned shame that such a law has to be passed.

It should be a given that any candidate for the Presidency should be able to prove himself eligible. And that they be required to do so.

Why should it have to be made a law? Because the man in the White House today cannot and will not prove himself to be eligible.

I predict Obama will not run for a second term if this law goes into effect, Thano You Arizona.

Whether the “birther” are right or not, why is this legislation a bad thing? AZ is only safeguarding the integrity of the election process by correcting a huge oversight.
