There’s a white tribe all right, but it does not have to do with the tea party movement. I look at the young white kids who have tribal piercings and tattoos and ear thingys that slowly expand the holes in their ear lobes. That’s white kids looking and acting tribal. They seem to stick together and separate themselves from other groups by their look and musical taste. I don’t think this is a good trend, because it seems designed to shock and scare grown-ups, which are the group we really need them to join.

Read the article, people. He’s not talking about race; he’s talking about a reassertion of the traditional American “tribe.” I think he’s right about that. Middle America is tired of the elites promoting every cultural tradition except traditional America’s.

On first glance, what Pat says may make sense. I believe, however, that the US will ultimately be like Brazil racially: Whites (and Asians) at the top, whites and browns in the middle, blacks and browns at the bottom. There will not likely be a "race war" (if we would have had one, it would have occurred from the mid-60s through the early 70s), and "whites" will have a large plurality for some time. Besides, 1. Majorities don't really matter in terms of "power", see the Alawites in Syria and the Persians in Iran (the latter have a large plurality). In Latin America, those of European, Jewish, and Middle Eastern ancestry tend to have economic, if not political power despite being minorities. 2. "Latinos" are themselves a western, racially mixed people, and who's to tell how much intermarriage will take place, particularly as immigration drops off late in the century.

The racial paranoia that I hear from Buchanan is a bit alarmist. While we will never be sitting around a campfire singing kum ba ya, nor are the cultural contexts there for the equivalent of the Balkans, nor is the racial/ethnic ratio skewed to the extent that it was in South Africa, Algeria, or Rhodesia.
