NY TImes ^ | April 18, 2010 | A.G. Sulzberger

It has been nearly two decades since New Yorkers faced their last doorman strike, but as the deadline for a new contract for building workers approached, the questions being posed throughout the city remained largely unchanged on Sunday.

Who will safeguard my apartment as I sleep? Greet my children when they come home from school? Accept deliveries? Clean the hallways? Sort the mail? Operate the elevator? And who, for goodness sake, will let the cleaning lady in?

I live in New York City myself. My doorman, concierge, and cook are one and the same person: ME.

I can’t imagine living in NYC without a doorman. You need security in the city. You need to have someone take in your deliveries or they won’t be there when you come home. You need someone to keep the crazies away from your entrance. NYC not the safest place. It’s not Detroit or NOLA but it’s not middle America either.

Doormen. Conspicuous consumption.

Good for everyone involved.

Wish I could have one.

Hate to see anyone lose a job.

But shouldn’t they go the way of the buggy whip and Gas Station Attendants?

Man, this is a shame!

Think of all the acidic Starbucks coffee spilling on the marble floor, as you try to balance your cup whilst punching “19”.

The Starbuck acid will eat away the marble floor forever!

Of course one can enter a building without a doorman. That’s part of why they’re there: to keep people you don’t want in the building from entering. The job is a genteel form of security guard that also does the courtesy of opening doors for the residents.

Was it a New York doorman who almost saved John Lennon’s life?

Here in the Twin Cities, the Ramsey County Courthouse/Saint Paul city offices actually had elevator operators.

They finally eliminated them 10 years ago but the actual employees weren’t let go because they were UNION EMPLOYEES! Instead, they were reassigned to other menial useless overpaid jobs working for Ramsey County or the City of St Paul.

On a side note, I once had to go to St Paul’s city hall. That was about 15 years ago. I stepped on the elevator and punched the button for a floor. I then noticed a woman sittng on a bar stool, her arms folded and giving me a dirty look.

At first, I couldn’t figure out what her problem was. and on the next floor, someone got on the elevator and said to this woman “18th Floor, please”. It then hit me, “My god, we actually still have elevator operators in this city?!”

One less thing for our militarily challenged CinCh to worry about while he’s unwinding/burning some serious tax dollars in NYC. (”Do I have to salute this guy?!”)
