US actor Danny Glover and 11 others were arrested Friday at a protest outside the US headquarters of French company Sodexo, which workers accuse of union-bashing and poor working conditions.
Glover was taken away in handcuffs along with the outgoing head of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Andy Stern, former Sodexo canteen cashier Terry Shelley and several others, after crossing a police line outside the US offices of the food services firm.
The action brought together hourly-paid workers, students, and even union representatives from Britain and France who sought to show support for US workers like Shelley, who said she was fired after becoming active in a trade union.
"We're here today to say no more to deplorable pay and working conditions," Glover told the crowd of around 300 as they shouted the protesters' rallying cry of "No Justice, No Pizza", a reference to the cafeteria workers who claim they are underpaid and receive few benefits from Sodexo.
"This is a global corporation with global responsibility and we are going to hold them accountable to that responsibility," said Glover, who has starred in movies including "2012" and "Escape from Alcatraz."
The rally was the latest in a series of protests and civil disobedience actions across the United States against Sodexo, which workers and trade unions accuse of paying an unlivable wage and offering poor benefits.
"Sodexo makes its money by turning good, high-paying, benefited, full-time jobs into low-wage, unbenefitted, part-time jobs," Stern told the rally.
French trade unionist Jean-Michel Dupire said Sodexo "has the means to respond to your demands but it's going into the wrong pockets."
The protesters burst into cheers and began chanting, in French, "Tous ensemble" or "All together."
The protesters said they mounted their series of actions after 16 Sodexo workers were laid off after trying to unionize or becoming involved in union activities.
But Sodexo officials told AFP that the company is not opposed to trade unions and insisted that the protest action was part of a smear campaign being waged by SEIU as it tries to "drive out other unions that have historically operated within the food service industry."
Not sure hes the same guy as the one in the photo with Glover ...
...that’s what the threads were about....IMHO, FWIW, that’s the guy.
Considering all the low-lifes Glover hangs with, to me the odds are well bwtter than 50-50.
I even went so far as an FBI back and forth concerning this.
His trail is “cold”.
This a$$hole is a nuclear engineer - a very dangerous one.
If that’s him marching with Glover.....
Did they make him take his shoes off? It looks like he’s in socks.
“Us actor Danny Glover is arrested,,,”
Darn...That is...so...sad. /s
Couldn’t happen to a nicer ...and more deserving...guy...
I’m and artist, and the photo of the guy with Glover and the younger 9/11 guy are very, very similar. The shadow where the nose is bent is the same, the hair line is the same, the beard is the same. I’m just not sure of the ears. It’s hard to tell from the younger photo.
Last I knew Shrum was hanging out in Phoenix. Then I kinda hoped he vaporized in Syria in Summer/Early Fall ‘07.
Sure didn’t expect this.. if it’s him.

What does that company make that I might buy?

Sodexo is a contractor for food services for colleges and other large institutions.
This entire hubbub against Sodexo is part of a ongoing union jurisdictional battle between SEIU and UNITE HERE.
Two large unions battling over the dues money of thousands of workers employed in this field. SEIU wants to appear more radical in its appeal and probably has eyes to take over the smaller union rival.
This is how SEIU has really grown in size over the past couple of decades. They used similar tactics to absorb smaller nursing home unions previously.
