PARIS (AFP) Big volcanic eruptions have had a cooling effect on Earth's climate, but the Icelandic event is too small to provide any such respite from manmade global warming, scientists said on Friday.
The benchmark cooling event of the past 20 years was in 1991, when Mount Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines.
It cooled Earth's surface by 0.5 degrees Celsius (0.9 degrees Fahrenheit) over the next year, enough to offset the impact of greenhouse gases from 1991 to 1993.
A smaller cooling episode occurred in 1980, when Mount St. Helens in the US state of Washington blew its top, an event that while impressive disgorged only a tenth of the material of Pinatubo.
The chill comes from a simple formula: The volcano spews out a huge amount of fine volcanic ash and sulphur dioxide, which are transported into the high altitude layer known as the stratosphere.
There, chemistry and physics combine, creating a fine layer of whitish particles that for months or years are blown around the Earth and reflect some of the Sun's rays rather than let the radiation reach the ground.
"Basically, it's like putting a reflector shield over the windscreen of your car -- you're stopping the inside of the atmosphere getting too warm," said Colin Macpherson of Durham University, northeastern England.
.. the eruption at Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull glacier so far was too small, did not have sufficient sulphur content and its plume circulated at too low an altitude to make an impact.
Any effect will be "very insignificant," said Scylla Sillayo of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in Geneva.
"At the moment, we are looking at something that's about 100 times smaller than Mount St. Helen's. .. Kathryn Goodenough of the British Geological Survey (BGS).

Oh I really do wish these “scientists” would stop saying things like this!!!
Don’t they GET IT?
God is going to make Europe go into another deep freeze until they finally say - oh right - Global Warming is a hoax after all!
The European people need to go find these “scientists” and have get real session with them, a “come to Jesus” session - unless they all want to see snow in July!
That's like that old Dave Attell joke:
"If you see a naked man running down the street, run with him."
"...because there is something really SCARY coming behind!"
(Monty Python voice)
“Nothing can stop Global Warming!”

Remember this when scientists try to blame this event as the reason we see global temperatures continue to not rise and they try to tell us we have been just lucky other events have delayed our inevitable destruction of the environment.
Yep, that there’s the stratosphere...
Sure it won’t just like it didn’t the last time it blew off. Wasn’t that the year without a summer?
Really? Mout St. Helens was a good sized eruption. However, Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull keeps on errupting, unlike Mount St. Helens. Mount St. Helens was never as bad as this. And Eyjafjallajokull has the potential of causing some dramatic cooling if it keep up.
Global warming “scientists” are like that annoying bunny in the battery commercials; or worse, like those horror movie zombies that won’t stay dead.
They’re right there with surprised economists.
What did they use to always yell at us when we were sneaking into the refrigerator? “Close the door your letting the cold air out”. Now there you go. We can use our refers to regulate the earth to the perfect temp at all times. Gets too hot, we all open them at the same time. Gets too cold we close them again. Thanks Mom.....
If an event this huge has no effect on the climate then why would the puny efforts of man be any more effective?
These fools still think they have more power over the Earth than God. Absolute arrogance!
First it was global warming, now it’s climate change. Once Europe goes into a deep freezed I wonder what they are going to call it. They need to find some excuse to increase our taxes so I think I see another global scam coming our way.
You didn't indicate, but I assume that is satire! (I hope anyway!)
The lunar deniers are all over at DU.
and what if it continues to erupt for 1 or 2 years, as it has in the past ????????????
My trademarked “smiley” substitutes as “tongue in cheek” < /s> etc. ;-) e.g. not really series. ;-)
