Stimulus: A group of ministers wants a big-box retailer to create jobs in a desolate area of President Obama's hometown. In a largely jobless recovery, why are the labor unions and political bosses fighting the clergy?
Unemployment in the Chicago area was 11.3% in February. Joblessness on Chicago's South Side was and is probably much higher, according to Omar McRoberts, a University of Chicago sociology professor who studies urban poverty.
So you'd think that if there was a chance to bring hundreds of jobs to an area that badly needs them, there would be little resistance. And you'd think that job creation not far from the president's old stomping grounds would be a high priority for both the city and the administration.

But will the pay a living wage?
Good question.
I don’t think though that there is much in terms of alternatives.
You gotta be crazy to build something like this right now.
There are no jobs which means there is no demand and no disposable income, and it'll be all graffitied up anyway in no time.
i say build greenhouses in these areas of urban decay such as Chicago and Detroit MI , esp Detroit MI- you can do a lot with greenhouse - grow veggies,flowers,etc...
yes,i know this seems a little off topic but wth? get those off welfare & stop having the state pay for dysfunctional families

Penn and Teller covered this a few years ago on Showtime. Watch out for language though.
Sad to say, many of the poor residents of that part of Chicago think that working at Wal-Mart would be beneath them. So, realistically, few of the chronically unemployed residents there would get a job at Wal-Mart, and use that as a step up out of their long-term poverty.
As to why any job is beneath someone who isn’t working, I’ve heard talk of how these jobs don’t pay well, lack of fringe benefits, etc. If somebody has no job skills at all, why they would turn up their nose at something such as retail jobs is beyond me. You have to start somewhere if you want to move up in this world.
If they don’t want it, fine. Let them wallow in their dung. As long as there are Asian merchants that sell malt liquor, they will be happy.
Make it a Super Walmart and solve the ‘food desert’ problem.
We both know that. They don’t. I was being sarcastic. Regards. Onwards and upwards...

Remember, always Say Union Yes!. On conservative websites, and elsewhere.
But 16,000 don't . . . you want to throw them under the bus to to score political points, like dear old tommyboy?
I say keep Wal-Mart pure and out of the South Side.
Screw those people (/s).
Crazy people like entrepreneurs built this country. Wal-Mart? Microsoft? Apple? Crazy! All the economy needs is for government to cut spending, cut taxes and replace the 435 congressmen with 435 Wal-Mart employees.
You’re right. Allowing a business to open and hire workers is a completely different thing than saying this will affect unemployment in that local area.
"Hey, Ubanga..."
Says the guy with a Pennsylvania flag on his member page. Why don't you flush one of your own toilets first?
Stupid is as stupid does. These “residents” elect their aldermen who are vehemently opposed to bringing jobs and possibly prosperity. The aldermen need the “residents” reliant upon them because it brings in the money. No sympathy whatsoever
You think the Union contractors would be happy about building a store...
