Officers with the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority have a suspect under investigation in the animal abuse case of Courage, a German shepherd found nearly starved to death April 7.
The suspect is a 26-year-old woman who lives in Bellflower, according to Capt. Aaron Reyes with SEAACA.
"We will not discount the crime here," he said. "We will go after a felony charge."
The dog, which ate dirt to survive, was taken from the home by an anonymous Good Samaritan on April 7 and transported to an animal emergency hospital in Orange County.
Volunteers with the German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County were called in to assist with his care.

PING for update
Assuming this woman deliberately starved this dog, with luck, she’ll be tossed in jail long enough to go through menopause. I can’t imagine that she’d be a model mother, either.

Looks like he’ll make it - miracle. They had to take dirt and stones out of his stomach that he ate to survive.

It is not just unconscionable for someone to do this, but downright evil. If she didn’t want the dog, she should have given it away or taken it to an animal shelter, but to let him suffer to die of hunger and thirst cannot be characterized as anything but evil.

The video is remarkable isn’t it? Courage has gained a lot of strength in just a few days. I hope his kidneys and liver will be OK. His will to live is obviously strong, and he’s eager to get moving again.
What a shame that this dog had to be so mistreated. You can see in his eyes that he’s one of those special dogs. He seems to have a good disposition in spite of his mistreatment. It makes me angry that people are so callous and uncaring.
Heart Breaker...
Poor thing. That just shows how much this poor baby wanted to survive. So sad. I know he will get a good home and be very loved and never have to go hungry again.
This person may have worked for a vet office, I HAVE NOT CONFIRMED THIS YET.
The latest update from my nightly GSROC email:
“Courage is starting to take steps in spite of having no strength at all. His legs are wobbly but he’s getting around and he wants to ditch his sling.”
This is so shocking and horrifying.
Makes me remember Terri Schiavo. What a difference a species makes.
