Tea party supporters are wealthier and more well-educated than the general public, tend to be Republican, white, male, and married, and their strong opposition to the Obama administration is more rooted in political ideology than anxiety about their personal economic situation, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.
The 18 percent of Americans who identify themselves as Tea Party supporters look like Republicans in many ways, but they hold more conservative views on a range of issues and tend to be older than Republicans generally. They are also more likely than Republicans as a whole to describe themselves as very conservative and President Obama as very liberal.
And while most Republicans say they are dissatisfied with Washington, Tea Party supporters are more likely to classify themselves as angry.
Speculation and anecdotal evidence have often taken the place of concrete data about who supports the Tea Party movement, and the poll offers some surprising findings.
Their fierce animosity toward Washington, and the president in particular, is rooted in deep pessimism about the direction of the country and the conviction that the policies of the Obama administration are disproportionately directed at helping the poor rather than the middle class or the rich.
The overwhelming majority of Tea Party supporters say Mr. Obama does not share the values most Americans live by, and that he does not understand the problems of people like themselves.

These two reporterettes are both lazy and stupid.
While the majority of us may be educated and middle class, it isn’t class envy or feeling sorry for the poor.
We are pissed off at the direction that politicians are taking this country. We want less government controls, smaller government and no unions for government employees. And we are pissed off that they are not listening to us.
This is disinformation from the New York Times, because independents are a huge part of the Tea Party, as well as some Democrats. Anyone remember the poll that said that more than half of Tea Partiers are independents or Democrats?
New Agency Proposed to Oversee Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae [2003] (New York Times ^ | 9-11-2003 | New York Times)
WASHINGTON, Sept. 10, 2003 The Bush administration today recommended the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago.... Among the groups denouncing the proposal today were the National Association of Home Builders and Congressional Democrats who fear that tighter regulation of the companies could sharply reduce their commitment to financing low-income and affordable housing.
''These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis,'' said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ''The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.''
Representative Melvin L. Watt, Democrat of North Carolina, agreed.
''I don't see much other than a shell game going on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing,'' Mr. Watt said.
the greatest number of Tea Party supporters blamed Congress.
Rightly so.
I guess that the Revisionist Stalinists at the Times have flushed this down the memory hole.
Congratulations. They have gone beyond “DNC” talking points now to “CPUSA” talking points.
They should at LEAST giver proper attribute to the Daily Worker when they crib articles...
We’re not Neanderthals> They are extinct.
We are renewed CroMagnons - survivors, strong, and growing stronger.
The Democrats, liberals and marxists are the Dodo Birds, and on their way to extinction.
Next, the Snail Darter Fish. Tastes like chicken.
what a lie....its rooted in unfair taxation...
Good Lord, a majority of Americans feel that way hands down.
If the slimes declares something a fact then we know it’s a lie.
Tea party supporters are “more well-educated than the general public.”
True, just surprising the NYT said it. There goes your stereotype, libs, that tea parties are all uneducated rednecks.
When upper and upper-middle class people support liberal causes, it's because they are "selfless" and "care about others."
Conservatives who get politically active do so because of "political ideology."
I guess they had to find a new angle after the racism thing didn’t work.
Actually it's a two headed serpent; class and race....
The only way class fits into it is that those of us who are truck drivers and teachers would love to attend, but Tea Party events almost always occur on week-days during working hours. Instead, I’m planning on making a couple phone calls to Congress tomorrow on my break.
It’s like the pro-life demonstrations that usually occur in the grip of winter on days when we need to work (dumb, dumb, dumb).
And they are correct. His ascention to the throne was made possible by lying. Most Americans detest a liar. "Anyone making less than $250 thousand per year will not pay a dime in increased taxes." Bite me.
He's the stupidest Affirmative Action Hire this country will ever have to endure and makes J.Carter look like a genius by comparison. At least Jimmy could build a rocking chair. And his brother Billy would have been a lot more fun at that 'beer summit'.
Jimmy gave us Reagan, Bush gave us Obama. The Tea Party wants to put an end to this nonsense and give us America, finally. Americans want America back from the dickheads who stole her. They don't care which party is at fault- they know we shall not stand if we continue with this nonsense, and they know the remedy. It's been staring us in the face for over 200 years.
Washington D.C. has been teabagging Americans for many years and yet, the Left tries to lable the Tea Party with such a disgusting act. Well, they must like it as they want to defend more of it, but Partiers are sick of it and November, if it were a decent month, would get here tomorrow.
If it wasn’t for the homeless needing something to sleep on, NYT would not have much circulation left.
Actually, i bet the Tea Partiers are about 70 to 80 percent of the 53 percent of Americans that pay taxes.
BTW, love how the Slimes end the article: "I think I changed my mind (from being a Tea Partier)."
Ah. They're angry, and the reason that they're angry is that the government is trying to help the poor, not trying to help the rich. Got it. Now please direct me to the cliff I'm supposed to jump off of.
Does anyone else just give up?
