Done deal, my FRiend. When Glenn Beck comes out and endorses the RINO Romney, I will immediately send out a check in the amount of $20.00 to Jim Robinson in your name.
D&C is LDS scripture
JoD is not a reliable record and is not even a church publication. It is mainly used as a source for out of context quotes.
The Millennial Messiah also not scripture and is McConkie’s understanding of what things will be like when Christ personally reigns on the earth and has about nothing to do with the governments of men.
Woah there I said support, not endorse. Beck will support Romney publically before the convention. Endorsement is usually written or campaigning for. Check my original post.
But if Beck fails to support Romney then i will send a $20 check to FR in your name.
McConkie references scripture in his book. He was also one of your apostles and highly referenced. He is a reliable and oft quoted source. What is the point of having apostles and prophets and modern revelation if you keep throwing them under the bus? How can you trust ANYTHING they say if it can be dismissed so easily.
JoD was ‘scripture’ long before the D&C was (and has been changed less), and the quotes taken out of it are rarely if ever taken out of context. But most LDS refuse to research that themselves and just dismiss it. The JoD was scripture and doctrine written down for the LDS in England since they did not hear the sermons in person.
But I understand the LDS wanting to distance themselves from embarrassing or ‘meaty’ doctrines that might make them look bad. After all, they have a PR campaign to run.
bttttttttttt
I personally have a lot of respect for McConkie, but the doctrines and position of the church is not defined by the opinions that come from the leaders but by the revelations that come through them from God. I only pointed out a fact that the book you reference (which BTW doesn’t make any kind of case for a fascist government) is not at all binding on members of the church. It is his own work and members are not obligated to agree with everything there. That is a statement of fact made to educate you, not ‘throwing them under the bus’
As for the JoD, it was never scripture. Do you even know where it came from? Some guy would go to public speeches made by church leaders (mostly when they were speaking as private citizens, not speaking for the church) and record it as best he could. No arrangements were made to ensure he was located in a place where he could hear well, he got there when he got there and if he wound up at the back, or by a crying baby, or with the wind blowing the wrong way etc. he just had to make do as best he could. If some distraction made him miss a word or phrase, it was missed in the final result. He recorded the speech using a form of shorthand with no punctuation, and it was sent to England where it was transcribed to longhand by somebody who wasn’t even there to hear the speech when it was made. They would have to guess where the punctuation should go. Then they were rushed to print by a commercial printer (not by the church) without the speaker getting any chance to review the result and correct any mistakes made in the process.
The full text of all the volumes of the JoD are online and I’ve used them many times to check the quotes used by our accusers. Time and again I find that they take quotes our of context and engage in other forms of deception to try and make their lies sound like truth.
For something to be scripture it must be accepted unanimously by ALL the General Authorities of the church, then presented to the members for a sustaining vote. Official Declarations or Official Proclamations are close to being scripture, and they too must be endorsed by all the members of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the 12 Apostles.
The verses I posted are scripture, the sources you cite don’t even come close to being counted as scripture, McConkie was as much opposed to Communism and Socialism as Benson was, and the JoD isn’t even a reliable record.
In short, any fears of Mormons imposing any kind of totalitarian government on anybody are just paranoid delusions fuelled by a lack of accurate information about who we really are and what we really believe. Mormons are the most conservative of all religious groups and constantly display a deep love for freedom and the constitution that our scriptures say was inspired by God.
I sure that people remember the MANY times, when QUOTES from the JOD were presented in these threads, the claim was made that "Well; those are NOT from Scripture."
The Journal of Discourses deservedly ranks as one of the standard works of the Church, and every rightminded Saint will certainly welcome with joy every number (issue) as it comes forth. (President George Q. Cannon, Journal of Discourses, Preface, Volume 8.)
Each successive Volume of these Discourses is a rich mine of wealth, containing gems of great value, and the diligent seeker will find ample reward for his labor. After the fathers and mothers of this generation have made them the study of their lives their childrens children will find that they are still unexhausted, and rejoice that this Record has been handed down from their fathers to also aid them in following the way of life. (Apostle Orson Pratt, Preface. Volume 3.)
It is impossible to give monetary value to the past volumes of this publication, Those who read the utterances of the servants of God, contained in this book, under the same influence by which the speakers were inspired, cannot fail to receive profit from the perusal. (President Joseph F. Smith, Preface, Volume 18.)
We take great pleasure in presenting to the Saints and the world the the Journal of Discourses, which they will find contains rich treasures of information concerning the glorious principles of Eternal Life, as revealed through Gods anointed servants in these last days. All who read the discourses contained in this Volume are earnestly recommended to adapt them to their lives by practice, and we can confidently assure them that, in doing so, they are laying up a store of knowledge that will save and exalt them in the Celestial kingdom. (Apostle Albert Carrington, Journal of Discourses, Preface, Volume 15.)
