AZ-Sen. 2010: Agitated McCain: Don't call me a maverick (McCain loses temper, Graham defends him)
Politico ^ | 2010-04-14 | Manu Raju & Jonathan Martin

John McCain — who built his political persona and his 2008 presidential campaign around the claim that he’s a “maverick” — told Newsweek recently: “I never considered myself a maverick.”

When POLITICO asked McCain about the contradiction at the Capitol this week, the Arizona Republican grew visibly irritated and snapped: “I’ve been called a thousand things. It’s absolutely ridiculous.”

He said 48 percent of the homeowners in his state are underwater on their mortgages. He said he’s always “done what’s best for my state and the nation.” Then he said it again, adding, “People can consider me whatever they want.”

And then he darted into the Senate chamber without explaining himself further.

“When you’re running for president, you show the public at large that I’ll put the country ahead of the party,” said South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, McCain’s closest friend in the Senate and the Republican who has played the deal-maker role ceded by the Arizonan. “When you’re in a primary, you’ve got to prove to people you’re a good conservative. That’s the difference in the forms. John has a record of conservatism that’s being highlighted now because he’s in a Republican primary. When you’re running for president, you highlight that part of your record, and it shows you’re willing to govern the country as a whole.”

(snip)

“John’s got a primary,” said Graham, “and he needs to be focused on his election.”

McCain & Graham ... another Tweedledee and Tweedledum!

I really think, no now I know McCain has lost it. He should be sent home ... permanently.

This story claims 48% of the people who have mtgs on their homes are “under water”, meaning they owe more on the loan then the home is currently worth. I have seen like comments made many times in different places.

If the loans are up to date, of what possible relevance can this be?

McInsane was for being a Maverick before he voted against being a Maverick.

If J.D. goes for the jugular, McCain will implode. I hope J.D. knows this. I presume he does.

None. The only time home value matters is when one is intending to purchase, and when one is intending to sell.

As for the OP, I find it refreshing that Goober Graham admits that McCain is two-faced. Highlight "this" when running for one office, highlight "that" when in a primary. Politicians, they'll stand for whatever you want them to stand for, until you hold them to actually stand for it.

“When you’re running for president, you show the public at large that I’ll put the country ahead of the party,” said South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham

Yeah, we just disagree on what's good for the country. Some of us think bankruptcy and allowing foreign nationals unrestricted entry to the country are not what's best for the country Lindsey. We'd like to see you lose your job, and we'll do what we can to see that happen someday.

John has a record of conservatism that’s being highlighted now because he’s in a Republican primary.

He's like no other conservative I know: he voted against the Bush tax cuts, torpedoed the president's judicial nominees with his Gang of Fourteen move, and his signature legislative achievement is in direct contravention of the 1ST Amendment! Hell, he practically endorsed Obama for president.

He has gotten one big thing right though: he put Sarah Palin on the national stage.

Somebody is going to make a back to back video, "I am" vs. "I'm Not." McCain, arguing with himself. Heh, here comes the McCain mutiny!
