Coughing up more for cigarettes

SMOKERS may pay an extra $6.50 for a packet of 30 cigarettes to help foot the bill for Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's $18 billion health reforms.
The Government's National Preventative Health Taskforce has called for the tax rise in next month's Budget and the soon-to-be-released Henry tax review also examines the option.
A tobacco tax rise could raise two-thirds of the $3 billion Mr Rudd needs to fund the sweeteners he has offered the states to endorse his healthcare reforms.
Up to three million smokers would be hit if the price of a pack of 30 cigarettes rose from about $13.50 to $20 over a three-year period under the preventative health taskforce model.

Coughing up ... Smoking will become more expensive.
The money from Australia's smoking prohibition would be used to fund Ruddcare.
The bootleg cigarette would receive an anticipated rise.

There’s a poll on the link:
Should smokers pay higher prices for cigarettes to help pay for hospital reforms?
Yes
No
There aren’t enough smokers to pay for these hospital reforms, everyone will soon enough be slammed with draconian taxes.(SCHIP is funded by smokers in the US - it’s not sustainable)
What a boom for the black market entrepreneur though.....

Price singles are so messed up in a command/socialist system that there is never enough money to tax. The system, over time, always decays and becomes more expensive, slower, with ever lower quality. It is capitalism in reverse.

Imagine a world where the entire atmosphere is thick with tobacco smoke, and people who need more oxygen have to suck on little sticks sold in packs of 20 each, just to get a breath of fresh air...or they start having anxiety attacks. It was an April morning just like this one, 28 years ago that I realized I couldn’t smell the incredible scents of Spring. I crushed the pack of smokes I just purchased for 75 cents and haven’t had another one since. From 2-3 packs a day to nothing. Two months later, I realized my craving was compleatly gone.

Those countries with Socialized Medicine also have huge taxes on cigarettes and alcohol.
I can hear the Obama voters scream now as the price of cigarettes and malt liquor doubles or triples in price to pay for Obama’s Socialized Medicine.
But Obama being a good Socialist will send government money to his voters to pay for their cigs.
To: Dixie Yooper
That's great. But why do you think you should control someone else? Governments are getting out of hand by controlling personal behaviour.
A wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicity. Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural Address.

They used to have 25 packs here in the states. Richland cigs were 25 per pack at the same price as packs of 20.
