Neglected German shepherd eats dirt to survive
Orange County Register ^ | 4/13/2010 | Samantha Gowen

Posted on 04/14/2010 2:36:44 AM PDT by South40

Somewhere in a lonely back yard, a young dog lived chained to a tree without food, water or attention.

He waited for that food, and when it didn’t come, he ate dirt. Eventually the dog laid down and he didn’t get up.

But still, he didn’t die.

An anonymous Good Samaritan stepped in April 7 and rescued the German shepherd from sure death. The animal, not much more than skin and bone, wailed in agony on the way to get help.

The dog was taken to an emergency animal hospital in Orange County where a horrified veterinary technician called friends at German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County.

He was on a hunger strike, hoping this woman would rescue him and “nurse” him back to health.

A little misleading.....dogs will eat dirt for minerals....well-fed dogs do this and it may indicate a deficiency in diet.

I hope you follow up on this in a few months and let us know the ending. People who treat dogs like this should suffer the same fate.

If the Register ever publishes an update I'd be happy to.

The dog was starving, and has severe malnutrition.

“And Courage is fighting. Grant said the dog, which he estimates to be about 3 years old, is eating well and attempting to use atrophied muscles to lift himself from the floor. He’s not out of the woods yet and more tests will tell if Courage’s kidneys and liver will recover from the advanced malnutrition.”

Do you still have your doggieping list?

This is a sad story with a happy middle and hopefully happy ending.

If you do have your doggie ping list, could you please add me

Thanks

I still don't get the "clever" joke responses on threads like this.

I have seen them on FR for years. Humor is a great stress reliever, and when the likes of Nancy Pelosi needs some sharp jabs, no one tops Freepers for coming up with one liners.

In this case, however, we have an animal that was horribly starved, abused, chained in a basement, and abandoned.

Is that what pops into your brain when you read this? "Gee, let me make a snide and witty remark!"

I just don't get it.

During the German’s WWII siege of the city, citizens of Leningrad ate the dirt from around a sugar factory that burned down, hoping to get nourishment from the melted sucrose that seeped into the earth.

"A little misleading..".....dogs will eat dirt for minerals

Gimmee a break!! Did you even read the article? The dog weighed just over 30 lbs. It was 60 lbs lighter then the norm for this breed. Dogs that occasionally eat dirt do NOT wind up with clogged intestines from the dirt.

I have owned the breed for over 40 years and have NEVER seen one eat dirt. I guess you could say if they were fed decently and properly thy would not eat the dirt...right?

Nor I. There are some truly sick, twisted people out there. You can tell a lot about people by how they treat the old and how they treat defenseless animals.
