Arizona passes strict illegal immigration act
The Los Angeles Times ^ | April 13, 2010 | Nicholas Riccardi

The bill mandates that police determine people's immigration status if there is a 'reasonable suspicion' they are undocumented. Immigrant rights groups say it amounts to a police state.

Reporting from Denver

Arizona lawmakers on Tuesday approved what foes and supporters agree is the toughest measure in the country against undocumented immigrants, making it a crime to be an illegal immigrant in Arizona and allowing local police to determine whether people are in the country legally.

The measure, long sought by opponents of illegal immigration, passed in the state House of Representatives. The state Senate passed a similar measure earlier this year, and Republican Gov. Jan Brewer, who has not spoken publicly about the issue, is expected to sign the bill.

The bill's author, State Sen. Russell Pearce, said the law simply "takes the handcuffs off of law enforcement and lets them do their job."

But police were deeply divided on the matter, with police unions backing it but the state police chief's association opposed the bill, contending it could erode trust with immigrants who could be potential witnesses.

Immigrant rights groups were horrified, and contended that Arizona had just been transformed into a police state.

“.....contending it could erode trust with immigrants who could be potential witnesses.”

Like Hell you’d get an illegal to step up and raise their hand as witness to anything.

To be honest, we have never discussed the subject. I suspect you are correct, and she will not have a problem with the questions should they arise. But, you know how it is when you love someone...We always hate to see them put in a bad situation that is not their doing...

Police state?!

When you go to a health club, they check your club membership. When you go to shop at Costco, they check your club membership. When you go to check out a book from the library, they check your library card. And, when you get pulled over for speeding- guess what- they check your drivers license...

Every peace officer has the legal right to check your legal identification in this country. So, how does checking immigration status now also constitute living in a “police state?”

The real irony and fact is, is that illegal immigrants are so far off the tax grid, that they don’t even pay any portion of the tax dollars that go to pay for the very salaries & equipment of the local police/ law enforcement that are protecting and serving the very communities that they live in!

And, now THEY’RE claiming to be living in a “police state.”

I’m truly amazed at what utter twisted lies & logic they come up with in justifying breaking the immigration laws of our country, and then saying that they are being discriminated against...

This is NOT about compassion or care. It’s simply a matter of fact and law- in this case immigration law.

public services consumed by illegals goes far beyond just that they’re illegal.

Her dialect alone will be proof she is an American. Although she might be delayed from time to time. She will have to serve her country more than she has already. Give her my respects and thank her for her service.

....and also remember that a majority of legal Hispanics in CA actually supported the old Prop 187.

The illegals that are here give legal Hispanics a bad name. Hopefully this law will have some effect on that.

Thank you, mdittmar, for keeping us reminded about how truly despicable Juan McPain really is. He’d sell his fellow Americans out in order to pander to illegal aliens. Why? For their potential votes! Juan McPain, you can’t out pander Democrats.

McCAIN: "Napolitano and I have a very good relationship. Talk about partisanship, we have an excellent relationship. She takes [the recent death of an Arizona rancher] very seriously, she is very concerned about it. And I think she is doing a good job."

How does McCain explain the public financing of the Arizona-Mexico Commission, and the Border Infrastructure Project, implemented in collaboration with federal, state and local government agencies........OUR tax dollars?

FROM THE ARIZONA-MEXICO COMMISSION WEB SITE http://www.azmc.org/

Welcome to the Arizona-Mexico Commission (AMC) online news and information resource. The Arizona-Mexico Commission is Arizona's premiere cross-border organization.

We are a mission-driven non-profit organization chaired by Arizona's (then) Governor, Janet Napolitano. Our mission is to improve the economic well being and quality of life for residents of Arizona by promoting a strong, cooperative relationship with Mexico and Latin America through advocacy, trade, networking and information.

"The Border Infrastructure Project database is the single source of information on Arizona’s border infrastructure projects. It tracks each project’s progress along its approval, programming and funding paths and provides the information in a concise and timely way. I hope this is a valuable tool for you and that you will use it often." - (then) Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano

The University of Arizona Office of Economic and Policy Analysis developed the Border Infrastructure Project concept in partnership with the Arizona-Mexico Commission. It is being implemented in collaboration with federal, state and local government agencies. Border communities and stakeholders will be engaged in this project through outreach efforts.

This needs to go viral............. McCain strikes again.

February 09, 2008 McCain pushes bill to improve health care......in Mexico!

What would Americans think, then, of a member of Congress who introduced legislation, not to improve health care in the United States, but to improve health care in Mexico?

Insane? Drunk? Unworthy of public office?

What would Americans think, then, of a bill introduced in Congress that required federal agencies to come up with a plan, not to expand health coverage in the United States, but to expand health coverage in Mexico?

Impossible? Unthinkable? Wildly irresponsible?

What would Americans think, then, of the motives of a senator, who not only introduced a bill to improve Mexico’s health care system andextend coverage to a growing population of 120 million people, but gave health insurance companies the right to help devise the plan?

Blatantly corrupt? Grossly indifferent to the well-being of the American people? Downright treasonous?

Unbelievable as it may seem, the Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act of 2005 contained a provision giving insurance companies the right to help devise a plan for extending US health care to Mexico (Sec. 1004. BINATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH INFRASTRUCTURE AND HEALTH INSURANCE).

Even more unbelievable, the senator who sponsored the bill was not on the verge of being thrown out of office for this odious piece of legislation. No, the senator who introduced the bill, Senator John McCain of Arizona, was locking up the Republican nomination to be our next president

Lachisula: “What if a certain person that has had trouble proving his citizenship were to be asked by a law enforcement officer in Arizona to show he is a legal citizen?”

Excellent question! Let me attempt to answer it.

First, the police are not going to go around randomly asking people to prove they are citizens. The law requires “reasonable suspicion” before police can act.

Secondly, this means the police will now be able to ask your immigration status if you’re busted for another crime. Not a suspect in a crime? Your certain person probably won’t be asked.

Finally, if you know a certain person who may have a difficult time proving their citizenship, now is the time for them to get it sorted out. I’m not sure what reasons there may be, but it does a certain person no good to live in doubt. Straighten it all out, and there’s no need to live in fear.

I imagine there are some isolated cases where children were brought here by illegal parents and lived here for decades since. A certain person’s best bet in that circumstance is to try and stay out of trouble so that they don’t end up being asked to prove their citizenship.

Most conservatives would probably support a very limited amnesty for especially hard luck cases like the above, but we just don’t trust RINOs or Democrats to do it. There’s a difference between being merciful and being played for fools. Conservatives are merciful.

Just like one of the check points..they ask you..are you a US citizen..or what citizenship do you hold. They ask that question no matter what you look like.
That isn’t profiling.
