One question I have is, how was Kaczynski’s popularity before the crash? I figured after the PO win, that his approval was declining. How we he be remembered by Poles, even those who didn’t necessarily support his party?

Not good. It's very likely, that he would've lost the election.
I wouldn't vote for him, for example.
But he was the President of my country, who died on duty.

He would probably loose elections, yet still you see how people react to his tragic death.
On Sunday I called my grandma (82) she said that Poland right now reminds her of the moment when Jozef Pilsudski died. If it looks like this right now, I can't imagine what will happen on Sunday, when President and First Lady will be buried in Krakow under The Wawel Cathedral along with mentioned Pilsudski, Jan III Sobieski, gen. Wladyslaw Sikorski and Tadeusz Kosciuszko.
