Sigourney Weaver attacks Oscar voters (Avatar didn't win Oscar because "Jim didn't have breasts")

Sigourney Weaver has launched a blistering attack on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, saying James Cameron didn't win the Oscar for Best Director because he "didn't have breasts."
Outspoken "Avatar" star Weaver said she believed Cameron -- who lost out to his ex-wife, "The Hurt Locker" director Kathryn Bigelow -- didn't win because the academy wanted to make history by naming its first ever female Best Director.
"Jim didn't have breasts, and I think that was the reason," Weaver told Brazilian news site Folha Online over the weekend. "He should have taken home that Oscar
In a stunning rebuke hinting at frustration in the "Avatar" camp -- who applauded gracefully when "The Hurt Locker" also took the Best Picture Oscar -- Weaver added, "In the past, 'Avatar' would have won because they [Oscar voters] loved to hand out awards to big productions, like 'Ben-Hur.' Today it's fashionable to give the Oscar to a small movie that nobody saw."

Speaking of Oscar winners, I watched Marty the other night on AMC. A movie that would no doubt never get made these days. CGI and 3-D does not equal good film-making.
Saw that one too this past weekend on TCM. Good character driven storyline, enjoyed it very much. You are right, no movies like that now...which is why I watch the old movies more than anything else.

We’d better be careful, she might pull the self destruct switch and we’ll all be screwed.

Could have knocked me over with a feather when Frank Sutton showed up. Then it hit me, he and Borgnine went on to star in two of the biggest “miltiary comedies” of the 60’s (”McHale’s Navy” and “Gomer Pyle”).

God forbid some Brazilians get electricity. Given the corruption and incompetence of the Brazilian government, they probably won't.

Yo! Sigourney!
“Star Wars” [subsequently retitled Chapter Four: A New Hope”] didn’t win Best Picture in 1977, and Lucas didn’t win as best director. Compared to that movie, “Avatar” was junk. And, in it’s way, a derivative of “Return of the Jedi”, with the Smurfs standing in for the Teddy Bears.

Well Ms. Weaver, Jim’s are bigger than yours in any case.
To: SmokingJoe
Avatar didn’t win because it was a mediocre story surrounded by incredible special effects. I enjoyed it enough because of the 3D wizardry but it was far from the best movie. Personally I thought District 9 blew it out of the water as a film.
