WASHINGTON -- Former Sen. Dan Coats, running for the open Indiana Senate seat that will be vacated by Evan Bayh (D), said he is running out of a call of duty, because he said he believes the current radical administration, is moving this country rapidly toward a European Socialist style of government.
Wasnt it Margaret Thatcher that said the whole thing wrong with socialism is that eventually you run out of other peoples money? Coats, 66, said in an interview here with First Read. Asked if he sees this administration as moving toward socialism, Coats said, I do. I do. I think this is a socialistic agenda. Its definitely moving this country rapidly toward a European socialist style of government.
Coats, the frontrunner for the GOP nomination, is facing a primary -- which takes place in 22 days -- from the right, notably from former congressman John Hostettler. Coats served in Washington for 28 years, beginning in 1980, first as a congressman then, in 1989 as a senator. Coats served as a district representative for Dan Quayle from 1976 to 1980 and was appointed to replace Quayle, when Quayle became vice president.
His ties to Washington have become an issue in this cycle of anti-Washington fervor. After leaving the Senate, Coats was an ambassador to Germany, registered as a lobbyist and lived in Virginia -- not Indiana, something that has become an issue as well.
But Coats said he is focused on retail campaigning and getting reacquainted with Indianans by participating in numerous forums sponsored by various Tea Party groups and county Republican parties.

screw this carpet bagger lobbyist! go back to virginia! this hoosier is voting for Don Bates Jr a true conservative
A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters in the state finds former Congressman John Hostettler with a 50% to 32% lead over Ellsworth, a current House member who voted with most other Democrats on Sunday to pass the health care plan. The survey was taken last Wednesday and Thursday nights. Fifteen percent (15%) remain undecided in that match-up.
Ex-Senator Dan Coats now posts a 49% to 34% lead over Ellsworth, with 12% undecided.
Ellsworth runs best against the third GOP contender, freshman State Senator Marlin Stutzman. In that match-up, Stutzman leads by just seven points, 41% to 34%. Eighteen percent (18%) are undecided.
In all three match-ups, roughly five percent (5%) of Indiana voters prefer some other candidate. All three Republicans held a lead last month just after incumbent Democratic Senator Evan Bayhs surprise announcement that he was not seeking reelection this year.
I assume you attend the debate between the five candidates at the Indiana War Memorial auditorium the other evening?
Screw coats...he has been in washington tooooo long. Hostetlers my man!!
Judging by the comments here so far it looks like the Democrat’s gonna win in a landslide....
Not impressed with the poles-way too many “undecideds.” We are supporting Richard Behney (richardbehney.com) founder of the Indiana TEA Party and small businessman. He’s Constitutional, Conservative and not a political re-tread or insider. Plus, Richard will actually READ the bills before he signs them. Why would we replace one seasoned politican with another one? Haven’t we had ENOUGH yet?
Sounds like the Pubbies are going to have the eventual GOP nominee so beat up, the Dem will win the Election.
I like John Hostettler’s message and operation. He has never sucked up forthe big donations and has kept true.
What sticks in my craw the federal firearm charge in Louisville. For those who do not know, Mr Hostettler got stopped in Louisville Airport security with a loaded sidearm in his carry on. Charges were pled to misdemeanor but not being aware the condition and location of your diearm is inexcusable. His excuse was also lame; he sounded like, I am sorry for being direct, a dumbass.
Mr. Coats was fighting against health care in 1992 and 1993. What has he done since 1998? I do not know a lot about Mr Stutzman
I was hoping Tom McDermott from Lake COunty would have challenged Ellsworth. A beautiful thing having a Lake Co D running statewide in Indiana to show how corrupt and out of touch the D side is.
Yeah, I remember the firearm incident but forgot who the repub was. That will come back to haunt him.
I attended the debate and was not overwhelmed by the plumber. He had some good comments but did not sway me.
Coats is a RINO of the highest order. He’s the kind of guy the MSM would love to saddle Indiana with in lieu of a RAT hack.
and...............I can tell you, the Tea Parties of Indian will not let this poser make past the primaries.
Coats was Bill Clinton’s butt-boy during his incrementalism.
We are really in favor of some new faces, especially ones who will READ bills before signing. Not sure why you want to replace politicians with politicians, but if we are going to be stuck with a seasoned politician, maybe Coates has some merit.
Who?
