Dear President Obama;
America is faced with the near-simultaneous ending of the Shuttle program and your recent budget proposal to cancel the Constellation program. This is wrong for our country for many reasons. We are very concerned about America ceding its hard earned global leadership in space technology to other nations. We are stunned that, in a time of economic crisis, this move will force as many as 30,000 irreplaceable engineers and managers out of the space industry. We see our human exploration program, one of the most inspirational tools to promote science, technology, engineering and math to our young people, being reduced to mediocrity. NASAs human space program has inspired awe and wonder in all ages by pursuing the American tradition of exploring the unknown. We strongly urge you to drop this misguided proposal that forces NASA out of human space operations for the foreseeable future.

“We need to pass this pride on to our children.”
Strongly agreed.
And now is the time to fight for that legacy.
A nation born of the frontiers must keep leading on the frontiers, or we will wilt away and others will take our place determining the course of human history. Others that are not believers in freedom I may add.
I implore everyone to not just sit and do nothing.

Takes literally two minutes.
It’s time to be heard.
That list of heroes is counting on us now.
We watched them make history, we watched them walk on the moon, fly shuttles never before flight tested before and do things most of us can only dream of doing.
Many risked all for our nation.
Now they call on us to not let the legacy they gave us die in Obama’s hands.
I always get a kick out of that one. LOL.
I wonder why it is that John Glenn did not sign. Partisan support for the one in the White House maybe?
It is unfortunate your friends feel the way they do. I guess they get no inspiration from the African American astronauts who have managed to reach for the stars. If there were no space program (on which the US spends a relatively tiny amount of money) then many minority and underprivileged kids will not be able to dream of flying in space or taking part in this lofty and exciting program. Very sad, IMO.
I disagree, in part. Sure, repeated trips into orbit to experiment on spiders might be redundant.
On the other hand, we should have already created a base on our Moon, and have an eye toward Mars and the rest of our Solar System. Our space exploration should start from the Moon, rather than our planet, because we use so much energy and resources leaving the Earth. It would be FAR easier exploring space from the Moon if we had a base there with supplies and life support.
The muslim in the whitehouse will NOT listen to our American Heros. However if it was a muslim asking him, he would do it. The muslim doesn’t like us, in fact, I’ll bet a whole dollar he hates what we stand for and what this country was build on. Remember one of his first, if not his very first speech as a camdidate for president? He said something like, “this is the greatest country in the world, not it’s time for change”.????? Well he’s been going lickety brindel forward as fast as he can to change our country and make it into a socialist country, which is communis/facist light.
I looked for his name, too. Considering his own recent flight on the shuttle, you’d think he’d want to support this also. Makes you wonder of the corrosiveness of D.C.

Glenn troubled
No one knows what private-sector vehicle will replace Orion if Constellation is canceled, however, or whether there will be sufficient demand to make space travel profitable. That troubles former U.S. Sen. John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth, who thinks NASA should take a gradual path to privatization.
“I’m not certain that we’re far enough along yet that the private sector can take up the slack in the whole program. That remains to be seen,” Glenn said.
Well, maybe he is for privatization. Problem is, by the time Barry gets done with our country, there’ll be no one here who’ll be able to afford it.
Watch the video at the Save Space rally..
Black Americans fighting for NASA are prominately featured...
When you cut a program to save money, you end up moving knowledge out of the field, that can not be replaced. Stimulus money is better spent maintaining capability to retain world leadership, than it is paying off your constituents.
Notice also he is also giving away leadership in Nuclear weapons systems. When you lose these people, you lose it all.
Obama. The quintessential example of The Wrong Stuff.
“Privatization” is just the veil behind which Zero’s trying to hide as he seeks to jettison any responsibility or commitment to space exploration. Manufacturing and operations can be done privately, and should be. The mission cannot be privatized, nor can the responsibility for funding it.
This is like telling Colt, Ruger and Taurus they’re now in charge of national defense, because he’s decided that privatization is the way to go. While killing the defense industry work at GD, Boeing, and Lockmart through program terminations.
And always thanks for the ping, KD. Science in general really makes my day.
(Great documentary on M-Theory here.)
Exactly.
Some folks here have gotten so anti-government they paint themselves into a corner and reject all things federal.
NASA human spaceflight is as stratgically vital to the nations future as much as the US Marines are to our security.
You can support NASA human spaceflight and private industry both. Everyone wants private industry to succeed, but they are beholden to the quarterly report and shareholder, not exploration and positioning America on the frontiers.

Excellent post!!! Thanks for those links.
“Helluva list there of some of Americas best.”
You said it. We have to make a stand and prevent Obama from “burning the fleet” like the Chinese did with their navy just prior to Columbus’ voyages.

When Hussein is done, the Third World will look like a paradise compared to the wreakage of the area formerly known as the USA.
