President Barack Obama has ordered U.S. flags in West Virginia to be flown at half staff in honor of 29 miners killed in the Upper Big Branch mine explosion.
In a proclamation issued Monday, Obama said all U.S. flags in the state are to be flown at half staff until sunset on Sunday.
The proclamation comes as federal and state mine safety officials begin their investigation into the nation's worst coal-related mine accident in 40 years.
Crews are still working to recover the last of the victims. Recovery attempts have been hampered by high levels of hazardous gases.
State Office of Miners' Health Safety and Training spokeswoman Jama Jarrett says recovery of the last nine victims should be completed by late Monday afternoon.

Come to think of it, I had mixed feelings about seeing the flag at half mast after 9/11 too. I wanted it high.
Our family hails from that neck of the woods in WV, and we are old enough to remember that things like this use to happen all the time. The safety practices and technology have eliminated the deaths to a tiny fraction of what it was like in my grandfathers time.
I feel sorry for the miners, but good grief they are paid good money now to go into those mines and do a mans work, there will always be risk no matter what laws are passed and these men understood that every day they walked in.
They knew that they were being paid good money to go down there and work, and that there were risks involved that no amount of prevention and technology will ever eliminate. It’s horrible, but if Obama thinks it’s shocking then he knows nothing about coal miners, their history or the families that have done it.
He did it becaue it makes him feel good, and because he probably thinks it makes him look good.
Maybe its s sign of the times...
i guess your right in the sense that this is just a horrible non-national accident. What should be done maybe is fly the WV flag at half-mast on national flagpoles. (?)
And I would bet the families of those killed are those Americans who “cling to their religion and guns”.

This was a terrible accident, but flying the flag at half staff for a week is not really in line with flag protocol at the national level. I mean, when a sitting congressman dies the flag is only at half staff until his burial (I think).but as the president, he can have the flag at half staff for any reason he wants. @lease correct me if I am wrong. This is an interesting civics issue.
But not for Gen Robert White, genuine American Hero, who recently passed away. If you don’t recognize the name you would would be glad you looked it up.

I am actually somewhat amazed by the level of ignorance of the Flag Code out there. For example, it specifically states that the Flag “shall not be utilized as part of any athletic uniform”. Yet I seem to see it popping-up on baseball uniforms all the time.
Like somebody said, its easier for fubar to do that than make a statement involving prayer.

My thoughts exactly. He wants the flag lowered low enough to get his hands on it and rip it up.....ain’t gonna happen though.
You know what makes all of this pale by comparison?...It’s the 2500 or so babies who die EVERY DAY in the abortion mills around the country. I’m not talking a year...A DAY. Where’s the flag for them, Mr. Obama? He probably would want to raise the flag to them.
You’re ALL right on the money. He has no clue about anything. He’s in WAY over his head. We survived the Clintoon machine but I’m really afraid with this one. I thought we were done with his kind after Clintoon was exposed and shamed. I look back and can’t figure out what happened to people’s minds that they would fall for this crap all over again. Didn’t they learn ANYTHING? Guess not.
