GOOGLE FRANKENSTEIN: MACHINES TO CHOOSE YOUR NEWS Mon Apr 12 2010 08:15:34 ET
GOOGLE CEO and Obama political activist Eric Schmidt declared this weekend that his machines will help decide what news you receive!
News sites should use technology to PREDICT what a user wants to read by what they have already read, Schmidt told the AMERICAN SOCIETY OF NEWS EDITORS, where a few humans still remained in the audience.
"We're all in this together."
MORE
Schmidt said he doesn't want 'to be treated as a stranger' when reading online.
He envisions a future where technology for news editing could help tailor advertisements for individual readers.
And he wants to be challenged through technology that 'directs readers' to a story with an 'opposing' view.
[An odd suggestion from the CEO of a company long accused of offering little to no conservative-leaning links on its news page, while aggressively promoting left-leaning hubs.]
Schmidt said GOOGLE is working on new ways to push adverts and content for consumers, based on what stories they've read.
What stories his machines have selected.
Developing...
Well, -I- certainly do.
smells a lot like canned spam to me
“We know who you are, and we know what you want.”
....I hope MSFT crushes Google...they’re a dangerous anti American voice.
Back in the day, most all major media outlets had bureaus in many countries. News events would be confirmed by multiple sources before they ever ran with a story.
Those days are gone. Now we have to rely on single sources such as the AP and blogs. Too easy for the PTB to manipulate.
Do you want concentrated news outlets (the MSM — or now Google) or distributed (the old style local newspapers — then niche magazines — now the internet)? Usually both exist and the majority (by definition) go for the concentrated or mass media outlets.
So basically, laz and I will be stuck reading stories about porn.
;-)
Ya know, I'll bet this is already going on. Google has been notorious in the past for aledgedly logging key punches and such. Their web browser was noted for sending usage stats back to the G spot.
If anybody is gonna be the first to dictate what you look at, it's gonna be Google, with Al gore grinning from ear to ear.
Google: “Today we have all sorts of positive news stories about Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid, for *you* to read.”
You: “No thanks. I want to get news from The Free Republic, The Drudge Report, Orbusmax, Rush Limbaugh, FOX News, several milblogs, maybe some Fark to remind me of how many idiots are out there, and Tampa Bay Online, to see what the leftist idiots at AP have to say.”
Google: “No. You don’t understand. You HAVE to be challenged. This is why we are ONLY going to show you all sorts of positive news stories about Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid, for *you* to read. And balance them with stories from The Daily KOS.”

Doubleplusungood. What is the news today Big Brother Obama? Oh, unexpected things. Okay.
Old KGB members smile.
Two points:
1. Google is a private company. They can do whatever the hell they want. Just as Drudge can post whatever articles he wants, so can Google.
2. This is only to help build pressure on Google to help weaken a key supporter of Net Neutrality.
PS: Duh.
Net Neutrality will be a fast death.
The way they can do this is by checking for ‘fixed IP’ (mostly on cable companies ISP networks) as opposed to ‘dynamic IP’ or using ‘tracking cookies’, as opposed to registration / password stored cookies.
Tracking cookies are very easy to defeat, just delete them selectively and regularly by using your browser or any of the free cookie and cache cleaners available on the Internet.
I’m Google free. I use IE8 and Bing as my search engine. I have not missed Google one single bit.
I mean, it’s absurd - NOBODY USES GOOGLE NEWS. No one.
