Campbell is the best GOP candidate for U.S. Senate

... The former California lawmaker, finance director, Stanford law professor, congressman and Berkeley business school dean offers substance over flash, insight over sound bites, accomplishment over confrontation. We recommend him.

If civility and bipartisanship really are important to voters, Campbell ought to have the upper hand in the race against Carly Fiorina and Chuck DeVore. Unfortunately, Campbell's gentlemanly demeanor and thoughtfully nuanced positions can be a handicap on today's campaign trail. The electorate in the primary, more conservative than the general population, may be inclined toward the more charismatic and simplistic Fiorina, if not DeVore, who is furthest to the right. That would be a shame. ... As an example, he supported last year's failed state budget compromise because it included new spending controls as a trade-off for taxes, and because it would have dodged some of the devastating cuts now eviscerating K-12 schools and our higher education system. It was the intellectually honest position of a leader, however conservative, who believes education is the key to California's economic future — a conviction widely held among Silicon Valley business leaders.

The purest conservative in the race is DeVore. He stands on his Assembly record, and he relishes campaign banter. (On Fiorina: "She's voted less times than Tom Campbell has run for office.") But a vote for DeVore is a vote for continued polarization. Of the three, he would be least likely to venture out of the partisan archetype of taking rigid positions and then refusing to budge.

Key things about Campbell. He supported the so called budget compromise as Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's State Finance Director. So we want to promote the finance director of the same Administration that has made California even worse than Grey Davis did to Senator? Not only that he recently while running for Governor proposed a tax increase instead of the much needed cuts in government to get Clifornia back in order. He has finance director presided over the largest increase in general funding spending in California history. I know some here are eager to win the Boxer seat but the truth is in the current environment all of our canidates are running within striking distance of Boxer. Campbell is just as big a part of the problem as Boxer. If you want a nuanced tax raising big spending social liberal then Tom Campbell is your man.

Key words for abandoning this looser: Finance director, congressman, and law professor.

E.G, helped CA become a third world nation, perpetrates idiotic laws, and knows how to use these laws to avoid justice.

I’d sooner elect Dilbert’s garbageman who consistently displays more sense than any progressive. (Definition of a progressive: Someone who went to college and majored in sociology or political science in order to avoid having to use his/her brain.)

Campbell's gentlemanly demeanor and thoughtfully nuanced positions

That bloody word again.
Whenever liberals are losing any argument, the first thing they do is to drag out that stupid “nuanced” every single time! It's lost all meaning.
In any case, all 3 candidates are well within reach of Boxer, which is what counts.
Field Poll:
"In hypothetical matchups for the Nov. 2 general election, the poll found Campbell leads Boxer 44 percent to 43 percent, Boxer leads Fiorina 45 percent to 44 percent, and she leads DeVore 45 percent to 41 percent. The general election matchups have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
Boxer 43 % Campbell 44 %
Boxer 45 % Fiorina 44 %
Boxer 45 % DeVore 41 %

So we pick the most liberal of the GOP candidates and
the Merc will support him in the general election? Ha-ha.
How many times have we been down that road? Just because
so many conservatives have left the state it doesn’t
mean that those of us that are still here are stupid.

They’ll endorse Campbell now but will savage him if he wins the primary just like the NY Times did to McCain

I do find it fascinating that two of America’s most successful female businesswomen, Fiorina and Whitman, were so out of the political loop through their business careers, though obviously they are turning to it now.

So much for the female multitasking, as I think you’d be hard pressed to find two such accomplished male CEOs that politically uninformed and uninvolved through their business careers.

finance director (for Ahnold) ... Berkeley business school dean ... civility and bipartisanship ... nuanced ...

Tom Campbell makes even Carly look positively conservative.

Thank you Mercury for making it perfectly clear Campbell is a limp wrist RINO statist while DeVore will actually fight for this country and freedom.

I don’t know if I can blame Campbell for Schwarzenegger’s actions. My gut tells me that he might be a better candidate than Carly. Chuck DeVore’s candidacy is going nowhere.

Compare Chuck DeVore to Marco Rubio. Marco has got what it takes to win, DeVore doesn’t. He reminds me of Duncan Hunter in that regard.

Between Campbell and Carly, I don’t know which of those to support.

“If civility and bipartisanship really are important to voters”

These are not high on my list of things to admire. I would actually prefer we give them all clubs and let them work these things out.

“Campbell sucks.”

Most of them do...I’m way behind in my California races. I get no TV that covers any of it. No radio...most of the stuff I can get is Spanish language..FR is the only place I have to get California election news. I like DeVore...he must not have enough ‘flash’ for others. Style over substance again it seems.

Campbell is just as big a part of the problem as Boxer.

When you consider their Israel and WOT policies Campbell is worse than Boxer! So much so that if Campbell wins the GOP nomination I will vote against Campbell by voting for someone that can beat him, i.e. Boxer. Boxer is good on Israel if she has the courage to stand up to Obama. (Otherwise she's a clown.)
