Mitt Romney Wins GOP Presidential Straw Poll

NEW ORLEANS -- Mitt Romney won the straw poll at the Southern Republican Leadership conference here Saturday in a victory that will be taken as a sign of the former Massachusetts governor's strength as a 2012 presidential candidate.

That's because the 2008 GOP presidential hopeful elected to skip the conference to continue his book tour.

Romney triumphed by a single vote over Ron Paul, who took second place 439 votes to 438. Both men won 24 percent of the vote. Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich essentially tied for third with 18 percent of the vote each.

And also how stupid. 147 of them wrote in George Bush in the 2006 straw poll even though he wouldn’t be eligible to run again in 2008.

Mitt still to this day praises and takes credit for Rommeycare. The “democrats did it” doesn’t wash.

Nice try though.

Well, Paul wouldn't win a general. But I do think Romney's chances are better. Yeah, he'd take low blows on his religion, but Romney knows how to campaign and after the mess Obama has made, Romney would get inde and dem votes, especially with his stance on immigration. The more I look at the mess this country is in, the more I'm looking not only to wipe out Obama and his agenda, but we need to turn this country around -- radically. I want someone who is capable of making serious inroads toward dismantling the statist apparatus. Gingrich would have that capability -- he could set an agenda conforming to constitutional principles and see it through. I think Romney would also, but I'm not completely confident of his will to do it.

Romney is guilty of Romneycare, and I will never vote for him. Ron Paul, while occasionally correct, is crazy. Gingrich is a good idea guy, but he's also old school politician...he'll reach across the isle with the likes of Pelosi and Reed. If he can smile as he shakes hands with the devil I don't want to touch him. Huckabee is the same as Gingrich...without the ideas. I think that, although I like her, Palin would not be able to overcome the negative stigma that the left has successfully stuck to her...although a bit of that is from her own hand. I understand why she left her job as Governor, but it still will be hung on her that she's a quitter.

The bottom line as I see it, none of these will be viable candidates, and some I think would be horrific candidates. Sorry, I don't have a great candidate to put forth myself. I normally don't like to be critical if I don't have a solution, but in this case, it seems more important to point out the problems even though I lack the solution.

See, I’m not so sure of that. Because I personally know “Reagan Democrats” who seriously considered Romney mainly because of his strong stance on illegal immigration. They went Obama for the “historical” appeal, but I don’t think that magic will be working for Obama in 2012.

Romney won only because he paid delegates and gave them free trips to show up and vote for them.

It means absolutely nothing. Romney is Obamacare. The GOP can’t run Romney and be against Obamacare. And Romney can’t will never take any but the most liberal states and Utah. He can’t win the Republican nomination, much less beat Obama.

LOL...

You're delusional.

Even Mitt calls it it's greatest success, to the point he had it included in his official Mass. portrait just recently finished (HINT that is some time AFTER the “democrats screwed it up”...)

Love has made you blind.

Its easy when you buy up most of the tickets and hand them out for free under the condition that free ticket means you will vote Romeny. (Yea, Paul does the same thing).

You're a delusional nut job.

I have been all over, but even if I had not I could hop a plane and fix that.

Upon my return you would still be a delusional nut job.

I would vote for Mitt Romney, this country is longing for someone to make sense of the chaotic financial mess we are in,and Romney could do that.
If it's that dire a true patriot would come forward NOW with his ideas and plans.

Apparently both you and he have no problem with continuing "the chaotic financial mess we are in" for another 2 1/2 years to MAYBE elect him President...So, what's your plan for the chaotic financial mess we are in if he isn't elected in 2 1/2 yrs?

Some real intelligent planning there...Kind of like a forced, one size fits all, government healthcare plan with no plan for how to fund it... Know what I mean?

Romney’s family and Romney himself are powerful figures in Mormonism, Romney himself avoided the draft by getting a special, Mormon awarded exemption to go to France to teach the racist doctrine of Mormonism (pre 1978), Romney was a leader and a teacher and a Priest of those teachings.

While the rest of us were watching Saturday Night Live on TV, the Mormon religion was still not allowing blacks to serve in equality to the white, Mitt Romney, blacks did not win approval for equality to Mitt Romney’s white status until 1978 in Mitt Romney’s religion, that is bound to come up as he runs against a black man.

Romney has two strikes against him going in to this if he tries.

One, his tenure in Massachusetts regarding health care is going to be used to tear wedges between him and conservatives, second, the Mormon card will be played endlessly and relentlessly — including that religion’s historic exclusions of blacks from the priesthood and other issues.

While he could probably survive either of those issues separately, together — plus his waffling on abortion, is going to be sufficient to prevent his election if he is nominated. Conservatives will not turn out for him, regardless of who the Democrat candidate is. It will be McCain all over again.

That’s how I see it anyhow.
