iPranged a Submarine

US nuclear sub rammed another ship causing nearly £60MILLION damage - while its navigator was listening to his iPod. Sailors aboard the USS Hartford had also rigged up loudspeakers so they could play MUSIC on duty, an official report found last night.

All at sea ... USS New Orleans before being rammed by the subSonar operators and radio men were missing from their posts. Others drove the attack sub while "with one hand on the controls and their shoes off", it said.

The report slammed the navigator, who was listening to his iPod in his cabin while revising for an exam at the time.

Touch dear ... iPod blamedThe captain, Commander Ryan Brookhart, was relieved of his duties after the Navy found that more than 30 errors, - including "an informal atmosphere" and "a weak command" - led to the "avoidable accident".

Fifteen sailors on the Hartford were injured when it hit the transport ship USS New Orleans in the Persian Gulf in March 2009.

Navy chiefs approved a whopping £57million repair bill for the Hartford and another £1.5million for the New Orleans.

In the movies, its crews like this that win the wars and earn the most medals.

I wonder how much the real world resembles the movies.

This happened March, 2009; the punishments have been meted out long ago.

Old news, except for the final-final report that was recently released.

Grounding in 2003, collision in 2009, ...

Yup...old news.

My son just got back from attending a weapons system school in Newport RI. One of the guys in the class was an FT from the Hartford.

They had been tracking the target, but thought it was further away than it was. FT's (weps) had strongly advised (tantamount to screaming) that action be taken to avoid, but were ignored.

About the only guys that didn't get whacked by the board of inquiry.

I'm sure there were problems and dereliction of duty on some level, but I would have to read the report myself before believing much of this stuff.

Which navigator was listing to a Ipod at his bunk revising an exam. The Quatermaster on duty or the Ships Navigator (it didn't say) what was the context. Why were they so close to begin with. Hummmmmmm

I knew two crewmen on the Hartford when it grounded in Italy back in 2003. One of them called me via cell phone during the event and we talked for a good while, pretty scary happening. The Hartford was damaged significantly then also.

The Captain of the Hartford was were relieved of command and sent back to the United States. Six other crewmen were also charged with dereliction of duty.

Well the story in your link can’t be the same story that the Sun is talking about. Hitting the bottom isn’t the same as colliding with another ship. Also the picture in the Sun article and story shows damage to the sail not the bow or keel.

Yes, two different incidents.

Grounding in Sardinia in 2003; collision in the Strait of Hormuz in 2009.

Different skippers, of course.

Sorry, TCH, I wasn’t meaning to sound snarky. Just that the sailors involved had indeed been punished.
