Polish president's body 'found' in crash wreckage - source
18:0510/04/2010
The body of Polish President Lech Kaczynski may have been found in the wreckage of the plane that crashed earlier on Saturday in western Russia, a highly-placed police source told RIA Novosti.
Speaking from the scene of the clean-up operation, the source said however that "additional tests, including DNA," would be needed to identify many of the bodies.
All 97 people on board died when a plane carrying Kaczynski, his wife, and a delegation of senior officials crashed in thick fog while attempting to land at Smolensk airport.
Kaczynski was on his way to a ceremony in nearby Katyn to commemorate the memory of some 20,000 Polish officers killed by Soviet secret police during World War Two.

Earlier reports say the pilot was told to divert (to Minsk?) and he chose not to.

why did they put found in quotes?

Because DNA testing is necessary for confirmation.

I have not felt this apprehensive since I was a child during the Cuban Missle Crisis.
I could say the same except I was a child living on a military base in the south east during the Cuban Missile Crisis...

We were at Camp Pendleton. Our bags were packed and lined along the hallway. If the balloon went up, my dad was going to go to one of the bunkers, but he promised to call and indicate that he was being so assigned; we would grab the bags and leave the house.
I have found it impossible to convey to sheeple what the cold war was really like.
Both of my parents died just a few years ago. I still grieve for those two incredily strong and resourceful people, but I take comfort that neither of them lived to see the scum in power today.

why did they put found in quotes?Probably because they did not "find" a body, but found body pieces.

Even more frightening is the fact that our military leaders are going along with the Kenyan’s destructive plans.
Who will step up to stop him?

This is a major air base/airfield in Russia - there is no ILS ??
I'm sure there is...and now I'm sure it suddenly fell out of calibration immediately prior to the crash.

Do the Soviets-I mean
Russian government-still deny the Katyn massacre never happened?
It seems they may have one more thing to say never happened now.

Oh they don’t deny it, but they basically said the Poles had it coming to them.

At least Pendelton was out of range of Cuba. Odds are you'd have had an hour or so before the Russians got their poop in a group and launched their home based missiles.

Yeah. It's all 'Spy Vs Spy' fun and games to them, on the rare occasions you can even get them to think about it.
Reagan presided over a victory so total the entire war has been forgotten.

Very sad news. The Polish people are good, strong people and surely will endure.

Poles had it coming to them. I guess it wasn't a "real" massacre then. It just looked like one.

Repeated tries at landings in the fog. Yeah, I guess Russia doesnt have ILS approaches at their big airports. This stinks big time. Despite its new found oil wealth the USSR is still a Third World country in *every* sense of the word.It should be no more surprising that this could happen *there* than it would be for it to have happened in Burkina Faso.

I lived in Richmond and was in the 3rd grade. I was radioactive toast if they hit DC or if they hit Norfolk.
Strange, we had these bomb shelters in the schools yet our drills never included the bomb shelter. Wonder who got to go to the bomb shelters? Probably the teacher that made me eat the green peas...
Did you have a shelter? Did your drills include reaching the shelter?

It should be no more surprising that this could happen *there* than it would be for it to have happened in Burkina Faso. Except Burkina Faso, being a muslim country, doesn't have anywhere near as many vodka soaked residents...
